hey everybody it's poll time.. now we see the top ten artists according to Billboard that they consider them now the most successful artists of all time.. Who do you think the greatest artist ever..
1- The Beatles: (59) weeks at number one (20) #1 hits (record) (34) Top 10 hits
2- Elvis Presley: (79) weeks at number one (record( (17) #1 hits (record tied by Mariah Creay) (36) Top 10 hits (record tied by Madonna) (104) Top 40 hits (record)
3- Mariah Carey: (77) weeks at number one (record for a female artist) (17) #1 hits (record tied by Elvis Presley) (24) Top 10
4- Michael Jackson: (37) weeks at number one (13) #1 hits (record for a living male artist) (28) Top 10 hits (record for a living male artist)
5- Madonna: (32) weeks at number one (12) #1 hits (36) Top 10 hits (record tied with Elvis Presley)
6- The Supremes: (22) weeks at number one (12) #1 hits (23) Top 10 hits
7- Whitney Houston: (31) weeks at number one (11) #1 hits (23) Top ten hits
8- Janet Jackson: (32) weeks at number one (10) #1 hits (29) Top ten hits
9- Stevie Wonder: (25) weeks at number one (10) #1 hits (26) Top ten hits
10- Elton John: (34) weeks at number one (9) #1 hits (27) Top 10 hits (57) Top 40 hits (record for a living artist)
this will require some thought. The Beatles had so much influence from jazz and blues, big band and classical. Presley did country and rock and a little r&b...on and on. Hmmmm...
Number of charting singles and number of weeks on the chart should have no bearing on an artist's "greatness." Horrible music can be extremely popular (Crazy Frog, anyone?).
From the list, I would pick either Elvis or the Beatles, but I think the whole poll is based on some bad assumption about what makes an artist great.

I agree with pE. I don't even like artists #3-#8. Horrible music can, and often is, very popular. I can count the number of songs on the current Billboard Hot 100 that I like on one hand.
Although I enjoy some of Stevie Wonder and Elton John's work, I'm reluctant to put them in the "greatest artist ever" category, simply because they've both released an equal or greater amount of work I can't stand. From that list, I'd say either Elvis or the Beatles, but in the end I'd go with the Beatles.

This is like the superficial greatest ever discussion. Of course, wouldn't we have to include someone like Garth Brooks? Doesn't he have a ton of chart cred? I love the Beatles and the King, but of those two, I say Beatles.

I suspect that aside from the Beatles and Elvis, the other artists won't even be considered by anyone in here. It's like asking what's better, Filet Mignon, Taco Bell or White Castle?

But you haven't lived until you've heard that shit on crack
If it was written on crack, listening to it on crack must sound like f*cking Beethoven! Of course, my favorite version of any Whitney song was covered by Mr. Rrrandy Watson and his band Sexual Chocolate.

Hasn't Billboard changed their method several times on determining what make a song/album number one? I think they've done that at least twice, no doubt more than that. Even by Billboard's own standards for the most successful artists, are they including the charts for other genres or when an artist tops multi-charts? How do they know what song is number one these days- is it entirely radio airplay?
As pE said, I'd go with either the Beatles or Elvis from that list.

That depends. Have I been drinking?
Much like White Castle, it takes a lot of booze to appreciate the genius of Whitney Houston.

Crack, as Whitney herself noted, is whack.
Notice, by the way, how many of those folks are absolute disasters, personally. Whitney's a druggie, Elvis was whacked out on pills, Mariah's had some weird moments, Elton had a drugged out loser phase, Madonna had sex with Dennis Rodman, Janet's a weirdo, and Michael Jackson shouldn't be allowed within 1000 feet of anyone under 18.
