Nothing about it was great, but nothing about it was really bad either. The story was interesting and original and in the end it all made sense, the acting was good, the effects were good, and finally, I really liked the ending twist, although many people didnt.

Answer me this Eccentro:

What in your opinion, made the Village so bad?

Ah, this I will answer. It wasnt the lush cinematography or the competent acting it was just M. Night Shyamalan's cheap twists that never ended and were never any good.

Twist 1- Oh who would've guessed the monsters AREN'T rule! This was revealed two-thirds into the film making the final third void of even the mildest scares. I had predicted this to be the ending but I had trusted that Shyamalan to know better. I mean he knew better in "Signs" a masterpiece compared to this load of crap, so why wouldnt he use his sense in his latest and most hyped film?

Twist 2- IT WAS THE RETARDED GUY THAT DID IT! Now this one was just plain silly! From the moment I saw Adrien Brody hamming it up as the mild, tame, retarded guy that no one would EVER expect to do something wrong I knew, if it WAS a hoax, that he was the culprit. When you introduce a character as stereotyped as that one you have to be creative and go against the norm. This is what really broke the camel's back. I realized after this "twist" that this was just M. Night cashing in on the tired twist ending. I could here him pitching the film. The plot--eh, it doesnt matter, but the twists there are THREE of them! That'll bring in a sh!tload of box office bucks!

Twist 3- Now this one really wasnt that bad. I actually kind of liked it, but at this point in the movie no ending however devious and cunning could've saved "The Village" unless perhaps I had walked into the wrong theatre. One problem: my friends had guessed that this would be the ending and I had unwisely dismissed the claim as being too preposterous. Another problem: my friends AGREED with me and they told me that they were JOKING AROUND in the first place. Third problem: weeks after my dad (who hasnt seen "The Village") suggested me to write a satirical essay about a group of people that lived in a medieval style universe but were actually living in the present. Itried my hardest not to laugh. Final problem: he was kidding about that too. He told me that that was about the dumbest idea for a plot, satirical or non-satirical, he had ever devised...

This, kraftdeluxe, is why I disliked "The Village"...

...Oh, and one final thing. M. Night ripped this one off of a novella. Which goes to show that Shyamalan doesnt have good taste for other people's stories either...DAMN!....

Well put Eccentro, good job. I doubt that I will be able to top that. But then again, I'm arguing for a cause that I dont "truly" believe in. As I said before, I didnt "love" the village.

But I thought that the twists were well done.
Then again I'm definately a sucker for "twists" but heres why I thought they were good.

Twist one and Twist two worked well TOGETHER and I never saw them coming.
I thought it was perfect how they had Bryce Dallas Howard venture into the woods AND THEN, later on they cut back to the part where William Hurt revealed that "those they do not speak of" were actually made up. Because it wouldve been shown chronolgically, you wouldnt be scared at all as she ventured into the woods. So after that, you know they are fake and all is good in the neighborhood. BUT THEN, one of the creatures appears! And tries to attack her! So your like "holy sh!t they really are real! Finally, she's able to trap it and make it fall into the hole where it dies. The movie then leaves you a second to think. "That's stupid, they were fake, but now they arent, how could that be possible" But then, you realize that the creature is actually Adrien Brody.
I can honestly say that I didnt see it coming.

Now about twist 3, I knew that all along. I thought that you were supposed to! So it wasn't a surprise to me when it was revealed. However, I thought that Shy did a good job revealing it.

So to conclude, it all comes down to how you percieve the movie. In my opinion, Signs is the worst Shy flick because its the only one without a twist. But for you it sounds like it was one of your favorites.

Now I didnt know that The Village came from a novella and that dissapoints me a bit that it wasnt his original idea. But then again, theres rarely many good movies that are not adapted in some way from something these days.

The real problem with this year is that so many movies were released. Its unfortunate, but directors are trying to spit them out as fast as todays audience can watch them. I guess its turning into a quanity over quality thing..at least we have a few good men in the business. (Wes Anderson, Scorsese, Tarantino, Raimi) and Jackson oh Pete... I really liked Dead Alive better than this nonsense LOTR but whatever tickles his fancy..

I was extremely disappointed with The Village.

Its not that it was a bad movie..its just that the actual events in the movie sucked. I know it left me, and many others, thoroughly disappointed.

Ugh, I can't believe how wrong...UGH!

The previews were just so misleading. I was so interested in seeing it, but when I did...total let down.

Sry, I'm just repeating everything i said, but in different text. I'm done now.

Heather deserves credit for summing up Eccentric's gigantic essay into a tight 100% concentrate, no B.S. post of 8 sentences!!! Well done Heather. She deserves a pin or something.

P.S. To Eccenticsam, you actually said a lot more than her about other things less relevant to the film (family and friends) that really added flavor to your... essay. I actually laughed out loud at the bit about your father! I think we have a future critic, or possibly director on our hands!
