OK, maybe it wont be the WORST movie of '04 but it will probably be the most dissapointing!

When I heard of the project my hopes sored. It was to be directed by Barry Sonnefeild, which was promising considering that he is a master of black comedy (I REALLY like the Addams Family!!) he could perfectly convey the darkness that is apperant in the novels. Then, I heard it was starring Jim Carrey---JIM CARREY!!?? As, COUNT OLAF!!?? Complete miscast! He's far too manic for the role. How about someone who is, although creepy, suave somewhat proper; funny in an uncomfortable way. OK, Jim Carrey I can forgive, especially because his supporting actors, the wonderful Meryl Streep and Jude Law, could possibly reign him in.

So, several months later I check back on the project...Barry Sonnefield is no longer directing........some obscure man who has a few mediocre childrens' flicks under his belt is now at the helm. Very dissapointing. I give him the benefit of the doubt. No one has heard of him so he could be a hidden treasure. Highly unlikely, but possible.

It all went to hell when I saw the trailer. Jim Carrey looks ridiculous and he acts like Jim Carrey not Count Olaf. ALSO, rumor has it, that he has "improvised" most of his lines. The book is written quite eloquently and I dont think Mr. Carrey's "improvisation" can match the charm of the written text.

On top of that one of the Baudelaire children is from the travesty that is "Cat in the Hat".

Mmmmm....Comedian Star drives film.....hidden under tons of makeup...acts goofy...improvises...acts off of a couple of children...directed by a nobody.......smells like a sequel to "Cat in the Hat"!

WTF? Are they really going to have a game out too? What has the world come to? I bet the game is going to suck as much, if not worse, than the movie itself. Remember The Cat in the Hat, or Catwoman? Sh*t!!! I mean it's bad enough that Lemony Snikets Novels based on those stupid and annoying little rugrats sucked ( I had to read them for a book report, unfortunatly), but a movie and A F**KIN' VIDEOGAME?!! For shame! Word to the wise: Stay Away!

Whoa now! IMHO the books are some of the finest modern literature for children out today. They increase kids vocabulary as well as giving them peculiar and interesting plots to indulge in. I am 14 and love each book in the series!

I know! I read the first one and I thought it was really cool, very well written ,funny and Count Olaf was an excellent creation. I may be alone here to think so but: Jim Carrey is going to be a wonderful Count Olaf and the film is gonna be great!

It don't make no never mind how good a book is, if the young hipsters of today are forced to sit still for too long , they will resent what ever it is that brings about this unfortunate turn of events.

I agree that the movie was a huge dissapointment.
They didn't even have the story in order.

Mazur, this doesnt mean the movie was bad. To have the movie in the exact sequential order of the novels would've been disastrously anti-climactic. You should appreciate the film maker's willingness to improve on the novels and make it less episodic...
