Woah woah woah there!!!
Calm down Mike L! Eeker
The Ladykillers was certainly disappointing but "horrible" I think is a bit harsh!

It may not have the sharpness of the original and it is at times very flawed but the film itself looks great and there are flashes (unfortunately too few) of brilliance from the Coen Brothers.
And lets not forget Mr Tom Hanks whose performance is nothing short of marvellous! Smiler

By the way, what the hell did the old lady say to the cops at the beginning? I didn't understand a single word!!!! Confused

She said something about a neighbor who listened to the "hibity-dibity' music. I agree with You Mister E. Ladykillers was far from horrid.

Thanks. I thought some scenes were quite funny such as the chinese guy's death at the end (hilarious) and the scene where Tom Hanks goes to hide under the bed with his cup of tea.
Unfortunately, compared to other Coen Brothers comedy that film is definitely their weakest.

True it had a lot of funny parts, but it was a real letdown because the Coens have been building me up for so long.

lol, I understand. I liked Intolerable Cruelty, I thought it was really funny. But I still think The Ladykillers is one of the most underrated films of the year.

I'm going to have to go along with Mr. E on this, up to a point. I own the DVD of the Alec Guinness "The Ladykillers" (it came in the Alec Guinness collection I bought.) I think the original is much better, but what do you expect with Guinness, Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom, among others, in the cast? The Coens did do a good job in the second half of their film, at least much better than some of the earlier stuff. Hanks did a killer job this year with accents: his Southern "gentleman" here and his sorta-Russian gentleman in "The Terminal." I don't think he'll get a nom this year, but I'd probably opt for his work in "The Terminal" over this film (I know...I'm TOO predictable!)

Wow, it may be that I'm a Coen fan, but I certainly was not let down by this movie. Sure, it becomes...idiotic at times. Hanks, in this film, is a force to be reckoned with. He carries this movie and his devious personality is enough to get a thumbs up from me... I am curious though, many years ago I saw an interview where the Coen's said they would only make big-budget film if it fit into their plans. Is this and O Brother Where Art Thou what they had in mind? Because I would much rather see an expensive revamped version of Blood Simple Big Grin
