Half-Life 2 is way better. Period.
Halo, while not exactly a "bad" game, is really really over-rated. But there is a reason for this.
Overall I believe that the computer games are generally better than games you can find on consoles. There are obvious exceptions but overall computer games have always topped consoles in terms of gameplay or graphics.
Halo is a new generation game and it definitely plays like one. The core of the game really isnt bad. Its fun but a bit repetative.
The real difference Halo has is that it appeals to a WAY bigger audience. I think more people want to buy a console and not worry about whether a game will run or not on their computer. Chances are more people that have never even really played any computer games will play a console game...and like it.
Halo was a ground-breaking game for console first person shooters. It just wasnt that good of a game...mainly because it was that "first" ground breaking console fps.
I just think it got so big because people with no knowledge on what a good game really is liked it so much. There are plenty of computer games that were better than halo. And still are.

Half Life 2 is just such an institution. The implementation of the gravity gun, that's just such a great gun, I don't know if it's innovation can ever be beaten

Both awesome games but Halo doesn't have anything on Half Life. So Half Life 2.

half life 2 is much better because it implements better level and gameplay variety...halo 2 just uses the same tried and true blast everything in sight formula

First of all, I wanted to say that Half-Life 2 is better than Halo 2. In fact, if you look at it in terms of technical innovation, the gravity gun alone puts Half-Life 2 on par with Halo 3, offset only by the Halo trilogy's inclusion of sticky grenades.
Edit: Everything after this is a bit off topic, so skip it if you just want the main stuff.
Yet I have to disagree with littlec. He says that games are better on the pc because they have had more time to develop their gameplay and the graphics can be far greater than those on the consoles, which is true.
I remember when Crysis came out. I'm not a big computer gamer, but I remember that the graphics on that game were far ahead of it's time. So far ahead that people were not able to play it at it's highest graphics setting, because the specs it needed were far too expensive. Since then, the demands placed upon pc gamers have been getting higher and higher. At least for console games, we pay one price for a box that will let us play a game with great graphics. Sure, they'll put out a new box every now and then, but we don't have to constantly buy parts to make sure we can run the games.
Also, what about the controls? For many pc fps, the controls are very simple, half-life included. But for a bunch of the rts and rpgs, the controls are a bit more complicated. You have your keyboards, but controllers are far easier to use. Plug in controllers only go so far when the game developers design a game to be used with the keyboard. Thus, for me at least, the console has reliable graphics at a reasonable price, and is able to simplify gameplay without compromising it's innovation. No doubt consoles have learned a lot from pcs, and still have more to learn. However, are pc games still better than the consoles? No. And they never will be again.

Half Life 2 is the greatest shooter of all time period. Halo 1 had a great campaign but 2 and 3 were complete rehashes of the 1st ones ideas.

Half-Life 2 is where it's at.
I feel guilty shooting the strangely child-like aliens in Halo 2.
