Glad you started this thread...I posted my comments under "Best Show on TV" which was not smart of me. There are Season Three spoilers ahead, if you care to know.
Here's what I know, from the shows and from what I've read about the show:
Kim and Chase will not appear much, if at all, this season. Chase appeared in season 3 as Jack's new partner and (secretly) Kim's lover. Kim was working (badly) for CTU in Season 3. They were mentioned in episode 1 of season 4 as still living in Cali where Chase works for a security company and Kim is raising his daughter.
Tony Almeda and Michelle Dessler (who was introduced in season 3 as Tony's fiance and a co-worker at CTU) WILL appear in later episodes of season 4. Michelle will, allegedly, have a good size part. But both were facing treason charges at the end of season 3 for their actions during that day.
President Palmer was ousted by the cabinet in Season 3 for incompetence or duress, if I recall, and I'm not sure they've explained WHY he's out of the limelight. But he did get some sort of virus at the end of season two from that creepy terrorist chick.
From the Variety buzz about the show, they made the changes, primarily, to liven things up and infuse some new blood.
If you really want to catch up, rent Season 3. A LOT of stuff happened that bears on the things that go on in the current season (Jack got hooked on heroin as part of an undercover operation, the President's wife was shot and (?) killed {we never saw the dead body!}, Nina Meyers was killed by Jack, etc.)

This is now my wife's favorite show, superseding any "Star Trek"s and "Law and Order"s. Yes, this season's totally crazy so far, and therefore up to snuff. As far as the President goes, what I understand is that Palmer didn't seek re-election due to his "family problems", and his wife IS supposed to be pushin' up daisies.

This is my favorite show on now, and as far as I'm concerned, one of the best, most original shows in, dare I say, TV history? I love it! Those of you that have not seen season 3, rent it! even if it has been "spoiled" by others, it is still worth it. The first episodes of this season are amazing so far. Does anyone know the time frame for this season? If what I'm getting is correct (from www.tvtome.com/24/index.html ) this season takes place 18 months after the end of season 3. I thought some references in the first couple episodes of this season were interesting, like someone saying they had been working on this case for 4 years. Did anyone else pick up on that?

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back. -Face

The time frame, as I recall, is that season 2 began a year after season 1. Season 3 began more than three years after season 2. And Season 4 begins 18 months after Season 3. So, it's been almost 6 years since the events of Season 1. I didn't catch the four years reference, jackie, but that would have put the beginnings of this case somewhere in the time frame of Season 3.
It's an excellent show, and the only one that keeps me enthralled for a full hour. I don't read, write, or websurf while it's on, lest I miss something.

Seriously...you KNOW Jack isn't going to mess around with going in that building. Screw the bunker-busters...he's got work to do! I know she has now killed the girl, but my wife and I were wondering if Shohreh Aghdashloo is under cover? Probably not, but you never know.

You're right...my bad. My memory failed me on that one. I'm guessing the son is gonna switch sides before too long...but they've got big twists coming, I'm sure. Who was that white dude in the warehouse where the Secretary and his daughter were being held?
