I finally got around to watching F.W.Murnau's 'silent masterpiece' Sunrise. It was great and I can understand how it's themes and techniques were revolutionary for its time. What I don't understand is how so many people at IMDB (and elsewhere?) go on and on about how it is not just a great film for it's time but how it makes them cry (one person claiming you are not human if you didn't cry)

I am not human!

I have cryed watching La Strada and listening to Kate Bush but with Sunrise the style, the silent posturing and melodrama just left me a little cold.

Am I not sophisticated enough? Are people subconsciously forcing themselves to cry in order to convince themselves that their heart is able to be moved by 'pure' cinema...

I really wish I was part of the "Sunrise made me cry"club.

Are you?

I was blown away by the way Murnau turned a brooding thriller into a stylized fairy tale, but no tears for me either. The subject matter may be moving, but the presentation is so original that it leaves you gasping more than sobbing.

"Naked Woman, Naked Man
Where did you get that nice sun tan?"
