5. Ghost - I ain't 'fraid no ghost. Especially if it takes on the form of a dirty dancing roadhouser like Patrick Swayze. BTW, I think Demi Moore is one of the finest lookin' actresses ever.
4. Punch Drunk Love - Whoa whoa... wait a second.... A movie about the unforseeable strength & power that can result when two souls take the jump into the unfamiliar territory of the map of the human heart ( a map whose directions only reveal themselves on a need to know basis) & it stars Adam Sandler, who actually acts in it? And it's good? The seventh seal hath been broken.
Repent. Afore it's too late.
3. Casablanca - The classic of all classics.
2. Roman Holiday - 80% of the success of this movie's depiction of romance is just a result of Audrey Hepburn's presence, alone.
1. Bridges of Madison County - A truly romantic story of how the escapist fantasy high/feeling that initially results with falling in love must eventually be realistically dealt with as the conditions & responsibilities of one's current situation come quickly creeping back in. I once heard that, in the context of human history, couples pairing up for the sake of true love is still relatively young. We as a species over-all , have not evolved enough yet to be able to deal & accept each other in a manner that would be considered as unconditional love ( which is the only real love). And it is because of this that the world population has yet been unable to formulate an effective means of discussion that would truly begin a process of unity between it's racial, social & gender factions. And maybe this is why so many of us make decisions more for the sake of security, emotionally as well as socially & financially . Decisions that may impede on our ability to follow our hearts & therefore sway us , individually and socially, from a path that would lead us to true love before it's too late.
"Criticism is the laziest form of expression ." - some deep dude.

2. Beauty and the Beast (1946) Too many beauty & beast films cop-out at the end, as does this one. The tv series was pretty good, at least the first two seasons.
3. Portrait of Jennie (1948) Could have been a flop but in the hands of Jennifer Jones and Joseph Cotton (and a great supporting cast of Ethel Barrymore, Cecil Kellaway & David Wayne) this is my favorite ghost romance flick.
4. Vertigo (1958) Great story on obsessive romance.
5. Dr. Zhivago (1965) 6. Far from the Maddening Crowd (1967) I could add a few more Julie Christie movies but these two are the best in this category.

9. Somewhere in Time (1980)

15. Only You (1994) 16. Happy Accidents (2000) Two great Marisa Tomei romance films. The former being the better of a long run of romantic comedies released in the early-mid '90s. 17. Waking the Dead (2000)

While I agree it's a tribute to earlier romantic comedies, isn't it really a remake of the '64 hit, Sex and the Single Girl?

Many audience members appears refer to Pillow Talk (1959) with Doris Day and Rock Hudson and a number of them also cite their movie in Lover Come Back (1961). There appears to be strong similarity though with the storyline/plot outline with as you mentioned Sex and the Single Girl (1964). It's possible that because the later movie wasn't has widely embraced as Pillow Talk, comparisons to it have been overlooked. Others, like myself find that Down With Love feels more like a fusion of the whole romantic comedy genre of the period.
filmdolly from New England (June 13, 2003) I think said it best:
quote:
Rock and Doris? I don't think so. A medley of ALL we loved from this transitional period, yes. Since when did Rock ever have an English accent. a combinationof Rock, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, James Bond. Incidentally, if you want to REALLY hear the song Down with Love, listen to Mr. Darin's version! That could have made this an even better movie, using more artist's tunes from the time. Rene's character, too, was a conglomerate, Doris Day, Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood. Even the movie itself was a combo, Pillow Talk, Sex and the Single Girl, Boeing, Boeing. I thought it had a multitude of elements from many movies of the era. I thought this movie was a spoof, you know, poking loving fun at something some of us remember fondly

Veronica Participant Posted 13 April 2009 03:01 AM Hide Post Here is a list of my top 10 romantic movies so far:
(not in order)
*My best friend's wedding *The notebook *Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon *Message in the bottle *Bridges of Madison Country *Serendipity *Nothing Hill *You got mail *Cruel Intentions *Message in a Bottle
This is what I could remember.
A decent list, nevertheless.
*My best friend's wedding - (one of my wife's favorite romantic movies). Enjoyable.
*The notebook - (I've missed this one, but it's been among the top of many lists).
*Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - (I didn't really focus on the romance angle for some reason).
*Message in the bottle - (I personally like Kevin Costner and believe he has a good grasp on being an authentic man).
*Bridges of Madison Country - (One of the best and I can't believe I left it off my list).
*Serendipity - (Watched it again last week. This is fun, entertaining movie).
*Nothing Hill - (Popular and Good).
*You got mail - (Popular and good).
*Cruel Intentions - (Fascinating and much different from any other of your selections. Curiously mysterious pick).
Based on your picks, I would also wonder if you haven't seen and what you thought of some other favorites of mine:
Music and Lyrics (2007). Simply Irresistable (1999).
