January & February are always fun months to read the reviews because they are traditional dumping grounds for the studios so turkey after turkey after turkey gets released.
In NYC so far 19 films have been released and only one I have an interesting in seeing FATELESS. I did see WHEN THE SEA RISES last year at the Walter Reade Theatre's Festival of French films and while it has fared well with the critics I didn't like the film at all.
One to look out for is the remake or sequel or extension to THE PINK PANTHER with Steve Martin & Kevin Kline, which has stinker written all over it. It was made by MGM, but before it could be released in theatres, MGM was sold to Columbia. The next studio executives must have held their notices because they cancelled its summer '05 release and moved it back to the winter of '06. I even saw newspaper ads for the film before it was pushed back.
There's a funny article in this week's Onion AV Club entitled How to Make a January Flop. I cracked up when I read the first one: Hire Uwe Boll to direct.

It's a shame, October through December was so damn good. Now all I have to look forward to is Underworld. And Cache finally coming to San Francisco... whenever that will be. What, is this movie on tour?

CACHE is having a platform release and has been playing in two Manhattan theatres for a month. At the art house in Queens that I go to because of its $6 matinee prices -- instead of the $10.75 a pop many of the Manhattan movie houses charge -- it opens there a week from Friday.
And Terence Malick's THE NEW WORLD, which played for a week in one Manhattan theatre late in '05 to qualify for Academy Award consideration, opens wide on Friday. It has popped up on some best of lists. What is interesting about TNW is that the version that will be re-released tomorrow is 15 minutes shorter than the version that played last month.
It looks like INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU with Steve Martin, Kevin Kline & Beyonce is getting released on February 10. This one was originally scheduled for a summer release but was pushed back when Sony bought MGM, which was the studio that made the film. So it is now an orphan. It is supposed to be read bad.
It's pretty obvious how I feel... Here is my review of Hostel:
It's early in 2006, but I can't see anything topping this piece of garbage for the "worst movie of the year" award. You know how in some horror movies they introduce some mindless inane characters at the beginning and kill them off quickly to give you a taste of whats to come, and then introduce you to the real main characters? In Hostel, the mindless inane characters are the main characters... total disappointment. I was almost happy to watch them get killed off. Everything about this movie is awful. Watching this movie was way more torture than any of the characters experienced. Don't waste a penny of your hard-earned cash on this piece of crap.
Well, last week we were treated to THE PINK PANTHER and BETRAYAL and this week FREEDOMLAND has stinker written all over it. It is being released in the dead of winter, it is being directed by a consumate Hollywood hack, Joe Roth, and there is no advance buzz about the film. Julianne Moore and Samuel L. Jackson, both of which have been in their share of stinkers, star.
If the fact that FREEDOMLAND is being released in the dead winter isn't a giveaway that it is a stinker, the quotes in today's ad in the "Village Voice" gives it away. They used Larry King and the ultimate quote whore, Earl Dittman.
When you see Earl's moniker, you know the studio is desperate. And they didn't screen the film for the weekly papers like the Voice, another sign the film is being dumped into theatres.
Well, FREEDOMLAND did indeed turn out to be a stinker. Even the ultimate quote whore, Rog Ebert, couldn't give this one the thumb's up.
Meanwhile, this week's stinker candidate is RUNNING SCARED, which stars Paul Walker, one of those bubble-headed actors who is known for going bare-chested in films. He ain't cast for his acting chops.
I don't really even know who Walker is, but he was a guest on Peter Bart & Peter Guber's show AMC when INTO THE BLUE was released last September. That was a real stinker.
The thing about this category is that it's what was released in 2006, not what you watched in 2006. I watched some good Marx Bros. movies, a 20-year-old Scorsese flick and the Extended Version of The Return of the King this month, but they don't count. Does anybody have a good movie that was actually first released in 2006 which they've seen?
P.S. I realize Chris likes to comment on "Worst"-type movies though.
P.P.S. Welcome to the site.

Well, RUNNING SCARED garnered a 41 in the metacritics scorecard this week. I'll reserve judgment until I watch Rog's show, but when I opened my "New York Times" this a.m. there was a quote from Rog in the RS add. It said "I'm in awe." I don't know yet if it was taken out of context, but given the easy marks that Rog gives films, I tend to doubt it.
I got a movie for the Worst of 2006. Ultraviolet, this movie was the most ill conceived idea ive ever heard of. The movie must have had a budget cheaper than my car and i have a honda. This movie had the worst plot and had the worst actors for the part period. If you see this movie god help you, I'm still hunting down Kurt Wimmer to get my money back! Taylor
I heard Basic Instinct 2 really did stink. Given the amount of promo that was thrown out for this film, perhaps there needs to be some special "You've got to be kidding" award for films like this which are heavily promoted in the media and yet still fail to impress anyone.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It looks like a horrible remake of Madagascar, you can obviously tell the animation is worse. Well at the box office its losing a whole lot of money.

Totally, that was the lamest ending they could have possibly done. There are probably several worse movies this year, but this is the worst one ive seen
