I just don't know about the staying power. I've watched his first 4 films over and over but Jay and Silent Bob loses its humour after a while. That's the problem with slapstick and penis jokes. A Clerks sequel, while more stagnant creatively, could have been more character based and closer to reality. Every film he had done up to that point had some sort of tie to a believable place but all those shot of going to Holden's loft and Brodie's comic store and the like were thrown as opposed to tied in. Hopefully this will make things right but with a title like "The Passion Of The Clerks" ... I have my reservetions. (trivia about me: the first thing I ever bought with a credit card was an autographed Clerks poster...oh so many years ago now)

Firstly, the only reason Smith continues on with the Jay and Silent Bob is because its his best creation to date. What he failed to realize is that the comic duo exceeds standards for supporting characters (complimenting very well to Smith's leads,) they are by no means interesting enough to supply an entire movie with intrigue. Smith is teh cool, so I support whatever he wants to do...and if pissing off large crouds of people with his crude humor is what he wants, I'm behind him

I will be the fly in the buttermilke here and say that I find Kevin Smith to be puerile. Grow up will you please. I did love CLERKS and liked CHASING AMY, but hated DOGMA. That was so pretentious and that whole "Jay & Silent Bob" schtick has got to go.
His career appears to be in freefall. His last film, with film killer Ben Affleck, tanked.

I am going to assume that you have had a long experience with seeing movies going back to the 40s and 50s. With Dogma there is something deliciously naughty and the way that evil is presented is seductively sweet and I think that Kevin Smith pulls it off way. This is an off-balanced film not easy to shoot because of the nature of the subject matter and here the difficult blend of evil, nasty, cruel, and comedy is beyond many directors, most don't or haven't tried and the opportunities are few. I can't rank Mr. Smith because I haven't been acquainted with much of his work but with Dogma I found it compelling, fasincating how he handled the tricky angles of morality and acceptability in the same movie.

I can't confirm, but is sounds plausible because Smith's career is in freefall at the moment. His last film tanked, both with the critics and at the box office. I didn't see it and can't even remember the name of it, but it came and went quickly. It was a lame rom com with Ben Affleck, another one whose career is going the wrong way, and Liv Tyler.

Yeah, that was Jersey Girl. i saw it and it definitely wasnt worth the hour and a half it stole from my life. it was hella boring and making ben affleck the lead actor was NOT a good idea. But i think kevin smith's other movies are pretty good.

I found JERSEY GIRL to be an odd film for Smith to direct. I felt it was a blatant attempt by Smith to make a conventional, commercial film.

Cosign... I think Smith, along with Ed Burns, is one of the all-time Sundance "discovered" hacks, albeit a productive one for a good 5-7 years. He clearly tapped into something his specific generation was feeling at the time, but I find myself completely, utterly bored with his films and potty humor from a content standpoint, and directors just don't come less talented from a camera/editing standpoint - the guy couldn't make The Grand Canyon look good.

I really can't quite come to love Kevin Smith. Clerks is a stone classic but while Mallrats and Chasing Amy are both okay, I really dislike all his other output. Dogma especially is a cynical, controversy baiting slab of self-indulgent crapness. While I am in no way religious or even in favour of the entire concept, Smith just seemed to take as many potshots as possible without ever making true headway or a decent point.

Clerks 2 wasn't bad, it was very vulgar as usual but it still had a moral. Personally, I don't think that Kevin Smith did the best job adding that spice of Drama to the movie but the dance scene was ridiculously hilarious.

quote: The only funny things in Dogma were buddy Jesus and "Bethany is part black?" Chasing Amy was boring. It's been a while since I saw Mallrats, but I remember it being pretty lame. I have no interest in ever seeing Jersey Girl.
I don't think Dogma was supposed to be as funny. They sprinkled in a few jokes, but mostly went with more serious stuff. I liked Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, but it would have been a lot better if they cut out about 15 or 20 minutes of it. Near the end I stopped paying attention. Chasing Amy was ok, just not very memorable. Mallrats and Jersey Girl both sucked. Clerks and Clerks II are by far my favorite movies from him. quote: I think the best thing he ever did was the Clerks cartoon.
If it was that good, why'd it get cancelled so soon? I only watched two episodes and I must say I wasn't impressed. They did a clip show on the second episode!
