I don't have a complete filmography of Cuaron in front of me, but he is more successful working in his native Mexico than in the U.S. I know his LITTLE PRINCESS remake was well regarded, but I had trouble warming up to it. And his modern updating of of Dickens, GREAT EXPECTATIONS, which starred Ethan Hawke, Gweneth Paltrow & Robert DeNiro, was a dud.
However, the last film of his I caught, Y TU MAMA TAMBIEN, was a home run. This film was a journey of two horny guys -- one of whom was Gael Garcia Bernal -- and this hottie who journey across Mexico. It was fascinating the way he was commenting on Mexico and its inequities on this journey.
Yeah, Y Tu Mama Tambien was a fantastic film. The way the camera saw so much more than the participants was exhilarating, and made the story so strong...

That hottie was Maribel Verdú.
I think Paz Vega's hotter tho.
Y Tu Mamá También was okay...I wouldn't give it an A. Maybe a B, or B+
There is another Mexican invasion with Cuaron, Guillermo Del Toro & Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu all having films all currently in release and all getting strong reviews.
The only one I've seen is BABEL, which is a flat out terrific yarn and is directed by Inarritu. Del Toro's PAN'S LABRYINTH was released yesterday and bagged a 97 score on metacritics.com. I am chomping at the bit to get at that. And on Monday -- Christmas Day -- Cuaron's CHILDREN OF MEN with Clive Owen opened to strong reviews.
