Anyone else on here a fan of Jodorowsky? I've only recently begun to get into his films, but already think he may be one that I will continue to follow.
Jodorowsky has only directed a small handful of movies, but each has been incredibly distinctive and like nothing else. He is best known for his sureal western El Topo (the first midnight movie by reputation) and Sante Sangre, which he made 20 years later. Although almost all his movies are out of print they can be purchased as bootlegs fairly easily.
I wouldn't call myself a fan, but I've seen "El Topo", "Holy Mountain", and "Santa Sangre" (that one at the theatre.) They're all quite phantasmagorically surreal, but I like "Santa Sangre" the best, which may seem strange. I went with my bro to see it, and he loved it and I loathed it. Then we went back with my best friend, and my friend loathed it and I started to appreciate how beautiful grotesquerie can be sometimes. Jodorowsky seems to try to film the most unappealing, bizarre stories possible, but he does have an artist's eye, so if you can get past how off-putting the subject matter is, you will see some dazzling imagery and maybe even a kernel of allegorical human truth.
I'll take a break and let somebody else chime in.

I caught SANTE SANGRE at a theater, but it was either projected video or a 16MM print and I am not in any hurry to see any more of Jodorowsky's output. I do understand he created quite a stir when he released these films back in the 1970s or whenever it was that they were released. I didn't understand what all the fuss was about.
