They're both helluh funny, not one doubt about it. The episode I love from South Park, is either the Guitar Queer-o one, or the Towlie episode. And from Family Guy, I love the episode where Peter plays for the New England Patriots. I guess Brian owed Stewie some money eh? Haha. Nonetheless, they're both utterly amazing.

Family Guy was absolutely great in the beginning, but its humor is starting to feel a bit tired. Some of the "jokes" aren't even jokes anymore -- just little retro skits, but with the Family Guy characters used instead.
South Park has managed to stay consistently funny all these years. I like both shows, but I'd rather watch South Park over Family Guy.
Oh, and concerning the question Stewie vs. Cartman: definitely Cartman. Cartman tricked his enemy into eating his own parents. When has Stewie done anything as remotely twisted??

South Park, and it isn't even close. South Park uses clever satire to poke fun at everything from politics, celebrity, and general news headlines. The show just keeps getting better and better. Also, being on a cable network allows the show to get away with far worse than Family Guy ever could.
Family Guy, on the other hand, takes every chance it gets to make pop culture references, and most of its humor is not relevant to the plot. South Park actually pointed this out in one of their episode, how most of their jokes deviate from the actual storyline. The segues into most of the shows jokes are forced and obvious.
All told, everything about South Park, from the animation to the writing, destroys Family Guy.

i was just wondering, i didn't feel like it would be necessary to start a thread about this, but does anyone else think that American Dad is just a cheap imitation of family guy?

Both are pretty funny in their own ways, but South Park is a classic, and has been around longer. http://www.filminsight.netMy website contains many articles just like this one. Family Guy. Firstly, I liked that show because there are so many crossovers and pop cultures (Mcdonalds, Wheel Of Fortune, Pac-Man..) And Family Guy has lots of humor too. But, it still can't beat The Simpsons!
