1. The Wire-In my humble opinion this is easily the best show on television. Nothing even comes close really. Take a handful of some of the greatest characters ever (Omar Little, Stringer Bell, Jimmy McNulty, etc), an intricate and complex plot, an almost absurd level of detail, excellent writing, and thought provoking subject matter, and you have the greatest television show ever made.
2. The X-Files-A favorite from my adolescence. I still like it it a lot but it looks dated. 3. The Simpsons-I grew up on this stuff. The old episodes are still very funny. 4. Veronica Mars-Maybe a guilty pleasure, but I think that it's one of the smartest shows on television. 5. Battlestar Galactica (Reimagined)-Just recently got in to it. Exciting and thought provoking, and always interesting. 6. Seinfeld-Still geniunely funny. 7. The Sopranos-The first two seasons are great. The rest of series has been steadily declining, but their is still a lot of quality acting. 8. South Park-Still funny. Has not shown a decline in quality over the years like The Simpsons have. 9. Buffy the Vampire Slayer-I blame my brother for this. He has been obsessed with this show since it came on the air and I got roped in. 10. Aqua Teen Hunger Force-Stupid as hell really, but it there are times where I can't stop laughing when this show is on.
This is the most difficult list ever but I'll give it a shot:
01. The Simpsons (I grew up on it and I still watch it) 02. Frontline (This is an Australian show that originally aired in the mid-90's, it is a mockumentry behind the scenes look at a current affairs television program, it was doing what The Office, Arrested Development etc. 10 years ahead of them and often doing it even better, I was 12 when the first series aired and it formed the basis of what I find funny in TV comedy) 03. Arrested Development (The most brilliant show to have ever come out of the US, period.) 04. Kath & Kim (wonderfully funny mockumentry dealing with the typical single parent Australian working class family) 05. The X-files (I'm not a big sci-fi fan normally but for some reason The X-files worked and still works for me) 06. Saturday Night Live (Particularly the 75-80 period) 07. Jeopardy! (I like trivia-based gameshows a lot but the twist on the format makes this one the greatest) 08. The West Wing (This would have been far higher on the list had Sorkin not left after the first four seasons and the quality and the political standpoint been weakened) 09. The Amazing Race (I think I'm the first to have a reality program on my list, most reality is trashy but this is genuinely interesting and exicting) 10. Frasier (Fabulously funny through the first five seasons, somewhat erratic thereafter but still hilarious at times)

1. Seinfeld. Easily the best US sitcom ever. Unpleasant characters, great scenarios. It's great to have Seinfeld because ALL (AND I MEAN ALL) Australian sitcoms suck.
2. The Monkees. Used to watch this religiously when I got home from school. Zany, with stellar pop music.
3. Six Feet Under. The best treatment of death and gay relationships I've ever seen. All of the characters were flawed but also lovable.
4. The Simpsons. Mmmmmm...Simpsons
5. The Prisoner. This screened when I was a young adolescent. I didn't "get" it but that didn't stop me watching it every week. I loved it when the Simpsons parodied it. Would love to watch it again.
6. The Sopranos. The first five seasons were addictive. James Gandolfino was superb.
7. Frontline. See post above.
8. Hawaii 5-0. Mainly for the theme song (Best. Theme. Song. Ever.) and Jack Lord's hair.
9. The West Wing. Just watching this now. My wife didn't want me to hire it, now she wants to watch 4 episodes a night!
10. Lost In Space. Another after-school fave. The egregious Dr. Smith and the robot make the show.
10B. How could I forget Scrubs? Second-best sitcom after Seinfeld.

I have made a short list of 22 shows, from Japan, the States, Britain and Australia. So, with enormous reluctance, I list 10 perfect shows, trying to keep a balance of genres. No order, except that the Simps is no.1. (Till about season 7)
Simpsons The Prisoner Seinfeld Curb your Enthusiasm The Wire Blake's 7 Rockford Files Beavis & Butthead Life on Earth The Singing Detective

You know it! I loved Cornfed! His "Joe Friday" like personality was great with Duckman's just plain insanity! The stuffed bear secretaries were great as well! To watch Duckman punish them the way he did was hilarious! This is a show that really needs to come to DVD. What's crazy is I nearly forgot about it until I had seen it on your list. Then, BOOM! I just started crackin' up thinkin' about those crazy characters in that zany world where man & animal existed side by side! It truly was the best show on USA!
quote:
So, do you think Jason Alexander was ever checked into hospital having a heart attack whilst doing that show? man, what a performance.......
With as high strung as Duckman was most of the time, I wouldn't be surprised. You can tell this character was stressed & Alexander probably did a tantrum 1,000 times worse than he had ever done on 'Seinfeld'.

Go Little Jerry...you are a fine rooster!
You lucky duck! I soooo want those DVD's, but $30-$40 a set is a little steep when I can still catch episodes 4-6 times a day on various stations even though I can tell some are cut short for syndictation. 'The Simpsons' are different for me because I know those episodes so well, I can tell when they cut scenes & that really fries my hash. So, I gotta grab 'The Simpsons' every chance I get! I plan on getting 'Seinfeld' at some point, it's just not at the top o' the heap just yet.

Monkey see monkey do, the first time i saw a repeat of a Simps episode that had been screwed with, I was just flabbergasted!!
I was shocked that networks are allowed to run previews for other shows over the credits, that they cld cut little bits and pieces before and after ad breaks, so thank the gods that DVD exists.
So many tv shows I want on DVD..(sigh)....and now here comes blu-ray/hd-dvd and we as consumers will probably be able to buy things like the entire Seinfeld on 2 discs, and all my current dvd's will be redundant.
Bring on the future...

I hear ya. I had over 400 VHS tapes when DVD was released & I vowed to replace all of them on DVD. I've still only replaced about 250 of them, for some reason they aren't releasing every movie I had to DVD yet & it's upsetting! Now I have over 740 DVD's & they are now releasing Blu-Ray. My friends started laughing at me, but I figure I don't need every movie replaced on Blu-Ray, only those that would be just beautiful in Hi-Def! So pretty much only Action & Sci-Fi are really calling to me to be converted. However, that's about half of my library!

Mmmm, I know what you mean my simian boy; watching something like A.I or Battlestar Galactica on Hi-Def Blu Ray should be a bone shaking, nerve shredding gloriousness....
Which reminds me, another tv show I like a lot...Battlestar Galactica..., a bit cliched at first, but its really coming into its own (where I'm up to at the end of season 2).
