someone has to say it...MTV sucks! the only thing they ever seem to play is rap/hip-hop and pop with the occasional good rock song...but after the song airs on mtv, all the preps and wannabees in your school ruin a completely decent song...also mtv has all these lame shows like the real world and the 70's house...why can't mtv be like it used to be, back in the days of the headbanger's ball
I totally agree! Okay we have the rap and pop s*** on MTV, Hip hop on BET, and country on CTV, so I think RTV (Rock T.V) haha should be a new one! O well idk!

I'm not sure which MTV you're watching, but I can't remember the last time I saw a video on MTV! You guys are lucky for seeing any video, even if it is crap! MTV 2 plays some good videos sometimes, but you still have to get lucky to see them. There are other music channels that play videos, but since this is about MTV, I will limit the comments to it. One of the funny things is that they actually play some good music in the background of their shows. My wife is a Laguna Beach fan(guilty pleasure), which means I also have to sometimes watch it, and I have heard bands I really like such as Death Cab, Bloc Party, and Arcade Fire. I remember the "alternative" show they used to have called 120 Minutes. I used to love that.

MTV is the posterchild of risk-aversion. They only play what they know will go over well, and within that they only play what record companies pay them to play.
MTV isn't about music, it's about the images of music stars.

I'm getting to the point where I'd be happy to see a music star on MTV. Evertime I flip past MTV, they're showing a rediculous new reality show that will last about a month before they replace it with an even stupider reality show.
MTV2 has a show called "Subterranean" that's sort of like the old "120 Minutes" except that it's only 60 minutes. Like "120 Minutes" it's only on Sundays at midnight. Why MTV feels the need to only air good music during the worst time slot imaginable, I'll never know.

MTV: music TV i don't know about you but i'm not seeing any music anymore. All they have is rap and reality shows. in my opinion i think they need to show more classic rock
I wish they had an Indie channel. And I agree with you about the Classic Rock more Beatles less Dem Franchize Boys! Public Enemy or A Tribe Called Quest or Madvillain (MF DOOM) would be okay for me though.

I don't know what the producers of MTV are thinking. The first word in their title is MUSIC! Their attempt at reality television is terrible, and I can't for the life of me understand the connection between reality tv and music. Just using musicians in their reality shows does not validate the relevancy of the show airing on MTV. I am not anti-rap or hip-hop but during those rare moments when they air an actual music video I almost always see this genre of music. There is a great need of balance, but prior to that there is a need to return to the concept that birthed MTV and made it socially relevant and entertaining.
Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

I truse you're making this plea for purely aesthetic reasons, Rev.?
MTV's own success at playing music videos is what drove music videos off of the channel. When they were the only game in town, they could draw enormous audiences with exclusive airings of popular music videos. Competition made that impossible, so they branched out into other unique content. With the network providing a healthy portion of Viacom's considerable profits, it's looks to have been a wise move from a purely business standpoint.
Besides, v.'s right. I'd just as soon track down videos online and program my own video channel. I can even sit on a stool in my living room and introduce them just like a real veejay!
Or maybe you'd best forget about that last part. Really.

i am relly sick of all the rap and hip hop.mtv seem to play the same videos over and over for weeks and its all the same crap.we are in huge need of a rock channel!
I will agree with the concensus with regards to MTV in general. In response to the cries for a "Rock Channel," the only drawback from that is the audience would be considerably less than a channel directed towards a larger audience (Mainstream hip-hop and pop has more fans than even the most mainstream of rock). With reference to the hip-hop bashing, I want nothing to do with it, there are literally tons of good artist in the genre, MTV just isn't aware that they exist (Not prosperous enough).
There are a few programs that I find tolerable on MTV, but none that would make me a regular viewer.
Fuse was originally advertised as a rock channel, my only qualm with that is last time I watched it 'pop' had made its way into the programming.
As is the case with hip hop, most mainstream rock is bad, and that is the best you can expect from Fuse.

Given the popularity of some of the homemade shows on youtube, I'm surprised more people aren't doing exactly that.
i can remember the days when MTV2 only showed videos 24 hours a day, it seems so long ago, but thank god for Vh-1 Classic, but its starting to show more programs too

I like that show, but now that videos for good bands are all available on the Internet, it's just as easy to watch there.
I think the Internet has eliminated the need for music videos on TV. The only music show that I even watch on TV is Austin City Limits (Arcade Fire was really good on it last weekend, btw). That show is produced in HD and looks awesome, so it wins over grainy web videos.
Of course, I also watch The Real World, The Hills, Pageant Place and Run's House on MTV, so what do I know? I guess I am a glutton for punishment.

Fuse has been making me happy recently. Today they had some random show that had Rufus Wainright, The Coral, and Acoustic Ladyland all live. I've also seen The Go! Team and I can't remember any others. I have no idea what show it is but I think it might be "The Dive" sinces its homepage features mentions of Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, and Animal Collective. I'm thoroughly impressed.
