With more than half of this year gone by, I was wondering what films stood out for people here, and whether they might make your year-end list. Here are the films that I considered to be good to outstanding, and may possibly make my year-end list:
Coraline* I Love You, Man* Up Ponyo District 9 Star Trek* Drag Me To Hell*
(Films w/ a star will make my list)
Other tidbits...
Most disappointing films:
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Terminator: Salvation
Worst film of the year:
Transformers 2
Yet to see...
Public Enemies The Hangover Funny People Bruno Inglourious Basterds Julie & Julia
"It's become so obvious, you are so oblivious to yourself"
Here's my list for 2009 so far. Keep in mind, I still haven't seen a lot of stuff.
1. The Cove 2. William Kuntsler: Disturbing the Universe 3. The Hangover 4. Star Trek 5. Funny People 6. Moon 7. Sugar 8. Rudo Y Cursi 9. Big Fan 10. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 11. Crude 12. Food, Inc. 13. Goodbye, Solo 14. The Lemon Tree 15. The Watchmen 16. Burma VJ: Reporting From a Closed Country
The only real dud I've seen this year is the French documentary Chomsky and Company. It's the only 2009 movie I've seen but didn't list.

District 9 Adventureland Star Trek Coraline The Hurt Locker Watchmen
I haven't really been keeping up with film this year. I still need to see Drag me to Hell, Up, Harry Potter, Two Lovers, Inglourious Basterds and more.
Bruno was a disappointment. It feels more staged than Borat and just, well isn't as good as Borat.
1. My Sister's Keeper 2. (500) Days of Summer 3. Julia & Julia 4. Bandslam 5. A Perfect Getaway 6. Monsters vs. Aliens 7. Sunshine Cleaning 8. Ponyo 9. Up 10. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian 11. Confessions of a Shopaholic 12. Taken 13. Watchmen 14. X-Men Origins: Wolverine 15. He's Just Not That Into You 16. Hannah Montana: The Movie 17. I Love You, Man 18. Coraline 19. The Proposal 20. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
I could go on all day.
Most disappointing: 1. Funny People 2. The Soloist 3. Aliens in the Attic 4. Obsessed
Worst:
The Informers
Yet to see:
Inkheart Notorious New in Town All About Steve Extract Lymelife Adam Tyson

Sometimes it's interesting to interactively contrast viewpoints on a movie by movie basis.
1. My Sister's Keeper (haven't seen, but from the premise of the movie it has all the emotional pull strings to capture the LOVE STORY crowd.
2. (500) Days of Summer (haven't seen this independent movie, but it has all the hallmarks of a great movie).
3. Julia & Julia (current among my top the movies, no more to be said at the moment).
4. Bandslam (not my type of movie).
5. A Perfect Getaway (again not my type of movie).
6. Monsters vs. Aliens (found it solid and entertaining but was missing the usual chemistry and balance of other fine animated features).
7. Sunshine Cleaning (a good movie but I found problems in its pacing and it didn't quite have the punch of LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE).
8. Ponyo (haven't seen, mixed on whether to see it or not, being corrupted by the more elegant "in" animated techniques coming out now).
9. Up (made my top ten list).
10. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (Disappointed - probably the worse movie for me so far, though it wasn't terrible. Nothing original, more of the same, in fact more but less sequel problems).
11. Confessions of a Shopaholic (not quite my type of movie).
12. Taken (above average but "derivative" thriller).
13. Watchmen (missed it. Probably need to see it some time).
14. X-Men Origins: Wolverine (good, but overdone and less than stellar character development this time).
15. He's Just Not That Into You (Good movie but with too many characters and uneven tone).
16. Hannah Montana: The Movie (Haven't seen it. Who knows? maybe.)
17. I Love You, Man (Not interested in the premise).
18. Coraline (Among my top ten movies).
19. The Proposal (Among my top ten movies. I'm especially happy to see this on your list).
20. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Sort of tired of this franchise).
I could go on all day.
Most disappointing:
1. Funny People (I'm looking to seeing this movie, I think I'd like it very much)
2. The Soloist (On my top ten movie list. I could really identify with this movie).
3. Aliens in the Attic (Not my type of movie).
4. Obsessed (Not really interested).
Worst:
The Informers (Doesn't sound to interesting)[/

1. My Sister's Keeper (haven't seen, but from the premise of the movie it has all the emotional pull strings to capture the LOVE STORY crowd.
It's not really a love story, though there is a love-story subplot. But yeah, this is just something for the emotional type, and if you're going to see this, I recommend having tissues handy. If you go to the theater looking for an escape, this isn't your movie (at least not at the theater. It may make a good DVD rental.)

2. (500) Days of Summer (haven't seen this independent movie, but it has all the hallmarks of a great movie).
Forget everything you thought you knew about rom-coms before seeing this one - this is by far the most realistic one I've ever seen.
quote:
4. Bandslam (not my type of movie).
Despite its apparent similarities, this is not High School Musical. It is much more realistic and less predictable. As much as I liked the High School Musical films, I have to say - why is their cafeteria so clean? And the endings are so cheesy and predictable. This time, it's not what I was expecting, because the main band doesn't win, and neither does the rival band. But if you don't like musicals, then it's not your type of film.

8. Ponyo (haven't seen, mixed on whether to see it or not, being corrupted by the more elegant "in" animated techniques coming out now).
Yeah, no one likes traditional animation anymore. However, if you want an explosion of cuteness, this is your film.
quote:
10. Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (Disappointed - probably the worse movie for me so far, though it wasn't terrible. Nothing original, more of the same, in fact more but less sequel problems).
I thought it wasn't as funny as the original, but it seemed to have more a plot.
quote:
16. Hannah Montana: The Movie (Haven't seen it. Who knows? maybe.)
Prior to seeing this movie, I had only seen one episode of the Hannah Montana TV show, and I thought it was average. When I saw the film, I was blown away. I have nothing against the show, but when I watched it again, I was like, "THIS show made THIS movie?!" Thing is, I will admit, the show is formulaic, forced, and predictable, and I could sum it up in a nutshell, but the movie has a bit more character depth to it and wasn't as predictable as I was expecting. Basically, if you're looking for a country-western style musical, this is your film, regardless of your past experience with Hannah Montana. The film's only flaw is that at the end, Miley tells the town that she's Hannah, but they say "Put the wig back on and be Hannah again! We'll keep your secret!" Are they delivering the message that it's okay to live a lie?!

20. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (Sort of tired of this franchise).
I didn't like Ice Age 2 very much, but this more than made up for it. Ice Age 2 seemed a bit like an excuse to introduce more characters, but this film only has two new ones: Buck the weasel, Scratté the female squirrel, and Peaches (Manny and Ellie's baby), and in the end, Buck decides not to join the herd. If you're a Simon Pegg fan, I say it's at least worth a rental.

I must say, your response is one of the most pleasant and informative comments that I've read in a long time. It was a refreshing change to open up your post. Thanks for the feedback to my feedback.

On a slightly more productive note my to-see list is just getting ridiculous for this year:
The Limits of Control Where the Wild Things Are Adoration Away We Go Passing Strange Thirst Still Walking The Headless Woman Tulpan Loot Munyurangabo Humpday Somers Town Ponyo on the Cliff Up The Beaches of Agnes Lorna's Silence
Also I would not recommend Antichrist to anyone.

that is a list of films i myself am trying to get my eyes and ears around, except maybe away we go.
just saw still walking. it is soo beautiful in how it pulls off ozu's style and the contemporary connections in a family setting.
headless woman is my favorite film of this year so far; i have yet to see the limits of control, eagerly waited and i missed it.
i will catch agnes godards film sometimes this week, its only playng for a week round here.
500 days is in a disguise of an anti romantic comedy and is everything that is a romantic comedy... huge fan of joseph gordon-levitt and he is still kewl!
I've heard a lot of mixed things about away we go, but I'm still curious.
So you liked 500 days, from what it's filled with a lot of cliches and not altogether that impressive. I might still end up watching it at some point, I don't know at this point I still would rather work my way through the rest of Bergman's filmography than watch my 09 list .

nah didnt like 500 days, thats what i meant to say that they marketed the film as an anti romatic comedy, so i thought finally a somewhat mainstream film will go in a different direction, but it is filled with every tired old formula of a romantic comedy.
what bergaman films are your favs? and which ones are u looking forward to viewing?
I loved all of them (except All These Women), in particular of the one's I've seen Winter Light, The Seventh Seal and Persona. (Also seen: Through a Glass Darkly, Wild Strawberries)
On my list: Fanny and Alexander, Cries and Whispers, The Virgin Spring, The Silence, etc.
