January 24: Inkheart (move over Adam Sandler's Bedtime Stories (2008), Brendan Fraser appears to be taking the bringing characters to life to a new level) 7 of 10 stars).
January 30: Taken (Liam Neeson plays a father to goes after his daughter's kidnappers with a vengence and with his particular set of professional skills, in what appears to be a hard-hitting action adventure) 7 of 10 stars).
February 4: The Objective (limited release, this seems to be the next move that really builds on "The Blair Witch Project" rather than "Cloverfield" from last year about a special ops team that encounters strange events in Afghanistan.
February 6: Coraline (looks to be the creative, "edgy" animation film feature of the year that improves on "Beetlejuice," "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "Corpse Bride.") added recently.
March 13: Sunshine Cleaning (Amy Adams gets to showcase a independent movie about her cleaning up crime scenes).
April 24: The Soloist (Robert Downey Jr., as a reporter, meets schizophrenic Jamie Fox musician in this drama postponed and pushed back from last year and now again pushed back from March 13. Hopefully all this continual rescheduling is to position this movie for an awards nomination later in the year).
May 8: Adoration (Atom Egoyan, director, brings to the screen a boy who puts a story on the web and obtains a strong response).
May 8: Star Trek (a sure technical Oscar nominee for its slick vision of the Star Trek franchise).
May 29: Up (children's animated blockbuster) [Entertainment Weekly "big movie"]
July 1: Public Enemies [Johnny Depp's back for a dramatic best actor nomination and possible win as Dillinger? Entertainment Weekly "big movie"]
August 7: Shorts (children's animated adventure about a black box that grants wishes)
August 7: Julie and Julia [Can Meryl Streep do it again this time as Julia Childs? Entertainment Weekly "big movie"]
September 9: Nine (another big musical this time based on the Tony Award winning Broadway Play inspired by Fellini's "8-1/2" opening on the ninth day of the ninth month of 2009 with an all-star cast)
September 18: The Informant (Matt Damon stars in this agri-industry whistle-blower case based on a true story).
October 16: Where The Wild Things Are (based on the children's book) [Entertainment Weekly "big movie"]
October 23: Amelia (Hilary Swanks gets another shot a Oscar with this docudrama as Amelia Earhart with an all-star cast)
November 6: Disney's A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey provides the voice in this animated big budget, 3-D version of the Christmas classic and competing alongside Roald Dahl's)
November 6: The Fantastic Mr. Fox (A stop-motion animated version Roald Dahl's story with a strong all-star cast of voices tries to compete with Disney's blockbuster).
November 20: Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law try their hand as this classic duel direted by Guy Richie who previously directed Snatch in 2000 and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998).
November 20: The Three Stooges (sleeper)
December 18: Avatar (James Cameron's big sci-fi, adventure blockbuster).
[added Entertainment Weekly's "big movie" designation to already posted movies that came out first week of January 2009].

it's a ways off but I'm quite excited for Tim Burton's "9" (not the same as the above mentioned "Nine"). The trailer for it looks awesome, as is the original short film

Definitely, not even a bit like the other "Nine" movie. But WOW. I just hope the content and the emotional connection will be as powerful as the action and the great look of this movie. Really look forward to seeing this movie. The animation technology and the script writing is coming at just the right time to really fuse together to make the splendid pictorial fantasy of geniunely magnificent proportions. Hopefully this will be one of them.

chaos Slacker Posted 31 January 2009 08:23 PM Hide Post I saw Taken. Cheese wizz. Brainless action. Disappointing.
I saw Taken earlier today and while I wouldn't say it was "brainless" it was "disappointing." In my opinion it was a decent movie but yes I apologize for being deceptively drawn into going to see it for the trailers. The movie didn't have the sharpness nor the intensity of a Bourne Identity movie and I will admit that it was derivative of other movies. There were adequate scenes that were pieced together, but yes they didn't have that punch like Die Hard or even Ransom. I am embarrassed that the movie wasn't better.

I used the term "brainless" for the very reasons you just gave. It certainly lacked the creative plot or suspense of a Bourne Identity. Vin Diesel would've been suited well to play Neeson's role. I think the director wanted it to be more dramatic but the material just wasn't there.
Critter Slacker First Class Posted 02 February 2009 02:21 PM Hide Post Hey, didn't Taken come out earlier this last year, i saw it ages ago...
Critter
It's possible. Interestingly, this movie had its release date in the United States set as one of the last dates on its international release schedule. It appears to have been originally released in France last Febrary and it looks like everywhere else since then, except for Brazil and Germany. So it's quite possible if you live outside of the USA to have seen it. I wonder when they released or will release it as an in-flight (passenger airline) movie. There are also plenty of movies entitled "Taken" released in previous years.

March 13: Toyko Sonata (2009) may be the Japanese American version of American Beauty (2000). There seems to be definite effort to make this family drama emotionally and sensitvely compelling.
March 20: The Howard Buck looks to be a both strangely different but familiar comedy as John Malkovich plays a washed up magician/hypnotist who eventually seems to reconnect to a bountiful number of fimilar names from film and television.

I will admit I'm a sucker when it comes to romantic comedies, but when one comes along with "A Christmas Carol" Dickensian twist well, even the predictability and possible dumb comedy, it's the message and feelings that count the most - if it can hit the sad and happy buttons, count me in. Looking foward to Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner with Michael Douglas in:
May 1: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past
a counter-programming effort directed towards women and a few men while "Wolverine" opens the same day.

I don't like being unnecessarily critical, but your post seems off base and not relevant to this thread. I've noticed a particular one-topic focus to your comments through this forum and it seems feels that most of them do not belong on this forum. Unless you have a better explanation, I'm tempted to report your posts.

They're accounts and IPs should be banned, they're clearly just adbots.
enoch. Enthusiast Posted 09 March 2009 01:53 PM Hide Post The soloist looks really good. I haven't foxx as a character that shows progression throughout the film, and this one looks like it will.
It's on "must see" list.
