I definately think that the LOTR characters would win, because
Gandalf vs Harry Potter/Dumbledore/Darth Sidious
Gandalf would kick all their asses, cos Harry Potter is a little popsicle stick compared to him, and when he did the Expecto, Petrolum thingy in Prisoner of Azkaban, it didn't even have an effect on the ghost things, when Gandalf, when he is still Gandalf the Grey, fights against the Balrog of Moria, and he couldn't even be touched when he used a shield spell, when he says "The dark fire will not avail you, flame of udun!" and SORT OF defeating him when he smashes the bottom of his staff when he says "You, shall not, pass!!!" Even after, he kills the Balrog after fighting with him for about 10 or 12 days. Harry Potter would pass out instantly on the Bridge, and Dumbledore doesn't really show any of his power in the movies. Plus, some people said that Dumbledore is mortal, while Ian Mckellen himself says that Gandalf is an immortal being, AND HE'S over 7000 years old and is the most Powerful wizrd in the Istari.
Ill leave it up to others to talk on other comparison of characters now.

I think this discussion is better served in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy forum.
