I love this movie! I believe that it is way underrated. A metascore of 52! COME ON CRITICS! It is so funny combined with a great cast and the fantastic artistic genius of Tim Burton!
I watch it again and again on HBO and never get bored. It's just an incredibly entertaining, hilarious movie! Does anybody agree with me?

Yeah, I have to agree, you know I think my whole family actually got up out of the house to go see this movie. I have no idea why, but I wasn't let down, it was crazy. I love the Grandma who listens to her music and the way she bobs her head and closes her eyes....stops..then continues again. I also like the inclusion of "Mr.007" and "Marty McFly"
Mars Attacks! was cool! Not only was it hilarious but it had one of the best cast ever! A great score, Tim Burton's imagination and satiric irony, hem...Tom Jones... Underrated indeed it was, it should have received at least 60!
I enjoy "Mars Attacks!" well-enough, and my daughter just watched it last weekend. The down-side of it is that after that crazy scene of the burning cows and the invading flying saucers approaching Earth, the beginning drags a bit while introducing all the characters without any real laughs, and Tim Burton's style seems very drab. But once the Martians show up, all is forgiven and the film goes into overdrive! Sure, it's funny, but it's also a good horror film after that.

Indeed. And you gotta love the scene where a martian disguised as a blonde woman (with a suspiciously large head) follows Martin Short in the white House and tries to kill the President. That scene is brilliant. Not to mention the "why can't we just get along" speech at the end and many other scenes.
Wow I guess I have a totally opposite opinion then everyone else here. I personally find this movie to be quirky, fun, and reminiscent of a WB cartoon, but also, unfunny, overly chaotic, poorly paced, and a complete waste of talent from everyone involved. This movie just had TOO many solid comedic actors for it to be THIS mediocre. Sure, the site gags are funny....the FIRST TIME but unlike a Wile E. Coyote short, this gag is not recycled in clever ways, it's just recycled. I couldnt watch the entire thing and I shut it off about 2/3rds of the way through. This is one of two Burton failings (Can anyone NOT guess the 2nd one??) and it's a pity because he is a director of brilliance and vision unfortunately he can be blindisided by enormous budget and AAA-caliber stars (*cough* Planet of the Apes *cough*). Sure this isnt as bad as his 2001 effort but it almost should've been then I wouldve gotten the whole "campy B-movie deal". In "Mars Attacks" they are stuck in a middle ground where the jokes arent funny enough and the effects arent cheesy enough to really be anything besides what it is...a movie TOTALLY deserving of a 52...
Your critique is pretty accurate, but since you missed most of the best stuff, it's incomplete. You don't know what happens to all the main characters and the Martians? I'll give you that it's not really all that funny, but I think it's more of a horror film in the second half, and I still think it works because of the Martians, Lisa Marie, Slim Whitman and Tom Jones!

Yeah it comes on HBO every so often so I wouldnt mind checking out the latter third because it is a pretty fun movie however dissapointing it may be...
Hi everyone I just wanted to let everyone know how much I enjoyed the movie mars attacks. It's a shame it got bad box office reviews. It was a really good 1950's style scifi movie. The Martians were great! I liked many of the scenes in mars attacks. I liked when the Martians were taking photos of themselves (while destroying buildings), playing bowling with easter island, changing mount Rushmore to all Martians, playing with the Washington monument, and many many more. To tell you the truth this the only movie where I routed for the Martians. When the Martians started getting killed I started crying my eyes out. Can anybody help me out on this mystery problem that has been bothering me? Sadly I wish for two things, a special edition version of the movie and sequel to the movie mars attacks. If any of that will ever be possilbe. * SIGH*
Thank You. Martian Leader.

Hi If there ever was to be a sequel to the movie mars attacks, how would it go? Would the Martians finally win? Would we know why they came to attack in the first place? Would we see more of the Martians? Well we could see more of the Martian Leader's drive towards girls. Remember when we first met him how he was looking at a girl in a magazine and at Natalie Lake. There are so many ways for a sequel. Let me know by answering these simple questions.

Hi I wonder why the martians in mars attacks switched natalies head with her dog? Was it for the martian leaders pleasure? If any one knows about this let me know. Also There was a scene in the trailer that wasn't used in the dvd version of the movie. It was with Sarah Jessica Parker dancing in her night gown. My dad thinks he saw it when we went to the theaters and saw the movie. The saturday after it was released on Fryday December 13,1996. I spelled fryday right, just look at the poster. Can anybody help me out on this mystery problem that has been bothering me?

Fine. I'll bite. I just watched it again a few nights ago. So, why not?

I don't think a sequel could happen because we basically decimated their entire fleet. If they attacked again, the movie would probably be around 5 minutes long since we now know their weakness (some kinda high-pitched yodeling).

I would say "they did it 'cuz they could". No real reason for it as far as I can tell. It just looked wonderful to me! Didja notice how her little dog body was shaking when she was scared? Wonderful touch!

The scene you're refering to is at the 1:47 minute mark in this trailer and it WAS NOT in the movie. I'm not even sure where it could fit! They took long enough getting to the action as it was.

While a sequel is pretty much out of the question (but with the Hollywood we have these days, you CAN'T say a sequel, or a remake, won't happen ), I would LOVE a special edition with a commentary (even if Tim Burton commentaries aren't the most talkative) and featurettes. I'd especially love to see the "creature designs" they came up with for the aliens. I just LOVE the look of the aliens in this movie and I think it would be graet to see what OTHER designs they had before they "settled" on this one!
Personally, I've enjoyed EVERY Tim Burton film I've seen so far. I saw "Mars Attacks" when it first came out with a buddy of mine. I loved it. He hated it. We never spoke again.
It actually looked pretty good upconverted and now I can't wait until they bring it to Blu-ray!

Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

I would have to say that I really enjoyed Mars Attacks! as well. It does have Natalie Portman in for christsake.
Maybe Sarah J. Parker's head was switched with the chihuahua because the aliens thought it was a better look for her. I thought it was a definite improvement.
