Easy (or not so easy) question, who are your favorite tertiary Simpsons characters and why?
I have two:
Sideshow Bob - apart from the hilarious voice performance from Kelsey Grammer, Sideshow Bob's always foiled attempts to kill Bart are one of my favorite aspects of the show.
Comic Book Guy - Worst. Episode. Ever. I love his sarcasm, he always makes the episodes he is in better.

Sideshow Bob: Every time I hear of a "New Sideshow Bob Episode" I get excited. My all time favorite "SIDESHOW BOB EPISODES"? 1.'Cape Feare' 2.'Brother from Another Series' 3.'Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming'
Another? Charles Montgomery Burns: He is the most evil man in all of Springfield! He has no heart or conscience to speak of. My all time favorite "MR. BURNS EPISODES"? 1.'Who Shot Mr. Burns' parts 1 & 2 2.'Mountain of Madness' 3.'Last Exit to Springfield'

Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

All of them. Seriously, I can't think of any that I dislike. Over the years, each one of these characters have enjoyed the spotlight, and there's been a fair amount of character development on even the most obscure characters. And, they're all fairly pathetic.
It's hard to pick favourites, but I'll try.
Moe - He's so pathetic and depraved, and he's got an incredibly violent mind, but he's always funny.
Cheif Wiggum - Most inept cop ever?
Ms. Krabapple - Desperate Slut
Mr. VanHouten - More pathetic than even Milhouse. He's a sad and lonely single man.
It's weird, every character is quite sad in reality. I wouldn't want to know any of these people in real life. They're all fucked up.

One of my favorite Simpsons episodes is "22 Short Films About Springfield", which is almost all tertiary characters. The "Cletus the Slack-Jawed Yokel" theme is pretty funny, as is the Lou & Wiggum Pulp Fiction homage.

Cape Feare is my favorite episode of all time, it is so brilliant.

Of course Sideshow Bob, and the Comic Book Guy(real name Jeff Albertson), who translated The Lord of the Rings into Klingon! I've always thought Smithers was pretty funny. And Dr. Nick cracks me up when he's on.
Il n'y a pas de hors-texte.

1. Hans Moleman "Alcohol has ruined my life... and I'm only 31 years old."
2. Professor John Frink explains the 3rd dimension in a Treehouse of Terror ep:
Lisa: Well, where's my Dad? Frink: Well, it should be obvious to even the most dim-witted individual who holds an advanced degree in hyperbolic topology, ng-bwui, that Homer Simpson has stumbled into... (The lights go off.) Frink: ...the third dimension. (Lisa turns the lights back on.) Lisa: Sorry. Frink: Here is an ordinary square... Wiggum: Whoa, whoa. Slow down, egghead! Frink: ...but suppose we extend the square beyond the two dimensions of our universe along the hypothetical Z axis, there. (Frink draws a wireframe cube on the blackboard.) Everyone: (Gasps). Frink: This forms a three-dimensional object known as a "cube", or a "Frinkahedron" in honor of its discoverer, ngu-hey, ng-hey. Homer: Help me! Are you helping me, or are you going on and on? Frink: Oh, right. And, of course, within, we find the er doomed individual.
3. Kent Brockman "Tonight a city weeps, as, for the first time ever, a hockey arena becomes the scene of violence following a concert by Spinal Tap."

It's always the sea captain for me. But what else would you expect from a Moby Dick obsessive...

Troy McClure has always been one of my favourites, back in the nineties i would annoy everyone in the room by laughing hysterically whenever he was on the screen. "Hi. I'm Troy McClure, you might remember me from such driver's ed films as 'Alice's Adventures through the Windshield Glass' and 'The Decapitation of Larry Leadfoot.'"
Lionel Hutz was also a big fav of mine. "Well, he's kind of had it in for me ever since I accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace 'accidentally' with 'repeatedly,' and replace 'dog' with 'son.'"

Me, too ! I actually remember where I was when I heard the news. Not only was he great on 'The Simpsons', but he was a fantastic comedian. One of my favorites. I was so excited when I heard he was gonna be playing Zapp Branigan on 'Futurama'! I'm glad they retired the characters he had played. I was worried thy might try to replace him with a similar voice. That woulda bothered me because it just wouldn't sound right. R.I.P. Mr. Hartman
