For someone who is clearly NOT one of my favorite actors, he also happens to have starred in two of the best pictures I have seen in the last 10 years...Truman Show, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I guess he just makes great film choices!

As for his "funny" movies, I guess I'd have to go with the first Ace Ventura movie. It's over the top, but then again, aren't just about all of his comedies?

My top 10 in order:

1. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"
2. "The Truman Show"
3. "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls"
4. "Dumb and Dumber"
5. "Liar Liar"
6. "The Cable Guy"
7. "Bruce Almighty"
8. "Me, Myself and Irene"
9. "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective"
10."The Mask"

Wow, Edward Nygma, I only realized now that your username Edward Nygma is the name of Jim Carrey's character in "Batman Forever." Until now I thought it was your actual name. I've only seen parts of the movie so I can't really include it on my list. Roll Eyes

My Favs - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

The first time he did that slow-mo rewind effect in Pet Detective I was on the floor! Although I don't believe he is the funniest guy on earth, he picks good roles and is very entertaining.

Wow, well when you say favorite 'Jim Carrey' movie, its hard not to think of the genre he has sort of created for himself. Inside that genre, I would like to think that Liar Liar is the overall best funny "rubberface" performance he gives. The movie with the best moments were "the Mask" and "Ace Ventura" for those certain scenes that really get to you and outside of the genre, of course, "Eternal Sunshine:

I'm sorry, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or serious...If you are serious, dictionary.com defines "genre" as:

"A category of artistic composition, marked by distinctive style, form, or content."

Basically it's the type of movie it is. Action, Comedy, Drama, Horror, and Science Fiction are all types of "genres." Wink

probably Eternal Sunshine, then the Truman Show. Those choices in the first post suck.

Sometimes it's difficult to separate appreciation of a movie from the actor. Sometimes it's difficult to separate an actor from the enjoyment obtained from a movie (laughter versus tears). As an actor in demonstrating the craft, I would have to say his performance in Man on the Moon (1999) was the most challenging hallmark of his career to date demonstrating his ability to mimic, to act, to be funny, and to be serious all in the same movie along with the finer nuances required. Perhaps one of the most difficult role an actor can find oneself in is to become another comic who actually lived. Comedy is already hard enough to do well, but add the component of having to become another real person who lived and then add the need for both comedy and drama of real life, this is more than most actors can do.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) provides Carrey's most romantic comedy role to date, The Truman Show (1998) a crucial turning point in his career towards serious actor in a rather unique, innovative mainstream movie, and finally The Majestic (2001) in one of his best strictly dramatic performances.

Charlie Kaufman notwithstanding, am I the only person who thinks that Carrey's role involves far more drama than comedy in Eternal Sunshine?

O.K. Eternal Sunshine really is a softly dramatic romance movie with sci fi tendencies with wit and humor thrown in. Videohound describes it as a black comedy with Jim Carrey playing mostly a straight role. Your proportions of drama and comedy are correct.

I have no trouble choosing my favorites:
Eternal Sunshine
Man on the Moon
Truman Show

These films do not rely on typecasting Carrey but actually challenge him in so many different ways to really act instead of him acting like a buffoon. These films are not classified as comedies but Carrey's performances are quite humorous in their own right and quite ironic - don't ya think?

Jim Carrey taking a stab at acting is on par with Michael Jordan taking a shot at professional baseball; Cute and entertaining for awhile with the occasional homerun, but when all's said and done, best left to those most qualified. Having said that, I was very impressed with Spotless Mind and consider it one of said homeruns. I also consider it to be one of only two dramatic movies that Jim has made, with The Majestic being the other. I refuse to buy off on his other two "dramatic" roles as being anything more than comedy in dramatic clothing.

Prior to any of these movies, I feel Jim gave a hint of dramatic things to come in Dumb and Dumber of all movies. During the scene where Harry and Lloyd decide to go to Aspen, Jim does his little speech about being tired of eeking his way through life and having nobody. In those 10 seconds, I sensed that he possessed the ability to tackle dramatic roles. (It was a feeling that went away just as fast as it came to me.) Take another look and decide for yourself. Call me crazy. Call me stupid. Just don't call me after 10pm.

I can't believe you consider The Truman Show a comedy in dramatic clothing. There are some funny moments, but they are really built upon a dramatic subtext dealing with complex questions. I would urge you to take another look at this one.
