I would now have to say that my favorite film or his is tied between Edward Scissorhands and Finding Neverland. Maybe Edward Scissorhands pushes slightly ahead. Also Pirates of The Caribbean is pretty close in third.

FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS!!!!! He was more Hunter S. Thompson than Thompson himself. Del Toro was the bomb too.

Nobody has mentioned his first film! a nightmare on elm street. wow. I watched it for the first time this year. probably during the summer because it was on late. I had seen the spoof of it on the simpsons halloween episode, so I wasn't completely surprised by some things, but it was good.

Johnny Depp is great because he's managed to make a big name for himself while always choosing offbeat roles. I also appreciate that fact that just because he's attractive he hasn't fallen into cheesy Keanu Reeves or Tom Cruise-type roles. He's always like "bring on the weird makeup and hairdos, I'll do it all." He really plays characters that people can identify with to some extent, and being able to feel for the character is a lot of what determines how much depth a movie has.

One very underground film he starred in that no one has mentioned is Jim Jarmusch's "Dead Man" (1995). This film is awesome! It's a strange interpretation of the old west in which Johnny plays a man traveling to a town for a job, where everyone laughs at him for being an outsider and eventually turn him into a wanted man/ outlaw. He then meets a lonely Native American who he travels with. They meet a number of weird characters, including a cannabalistic Iggy Pop wearing a bonnet. Anyway, I suggest this movie!

Edward Scissorhands is a classic because not only was it Johnny's real breakthrough, it was also probably Tim Burton's real breakthrough. It also accurately portrays the suburbs in a very cartoon-esque way. Tom Cruise was actually auditioning for the role of Edward... luckily he didn't get it! Can you imagine?!

I also love Benny and Joon, where Johnny plays a Charlie Chaplin- type character. What's Eating Gilbert Grape is an awesome and very touching movie. His gypsy character in Chocolat suited him very well, probably because he really does play guitar and live in France.

I just recently saw "Cry-Baby" and I thought it was hilarious, but incredibly cheesy. I guess that was the point, though.

Has anyone seen the film "The Brave" (1997)? Apparently Johnny Depp directed this movie. He plays a Native American man with a family who lives in poverty and deals with alcoholism, so to get money, he lets a racist gang beat him and videotape it. I haven't seen it, but I'd like to. I'm not really sure if it's even available in the United States.

He's perfect for a "loner" character but i wonder how he would be playing a more social character. Also, I liked him in charlie and the chocolate factory, despite what roger ebert and other people said

As one of the dinosaurs of the 60s who cut their teeth on Hoffman, Pacino, Streep, etc. Johnny Depp has stepped into the void as one of the great actors of this generation. His greatest gift is his choice of roles. Not only does he avoid roles that type-cast him, he chooses risky roles. When I first heard he would star in Pirates of the Caribbean I thought what a sorry choice. However, with his range he became the medium for Keith Richards to live through his character. Who would have thought of that? He made that film remarkable, and that role captivating. His range takes him from playing an insane writer (Secret Window), to a most interesting pirate, to the lovable character in the chocolate factory. No two of these characters are remotely similar. I believe we have only seen the first offerings of a talent whose body of work will rival Redford, Newman, Brando, etc.

Avocado, I'm glad that you mentioned "Benny and Joon" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". Those were both great (and underrated) performances. I've heard that he is working on an adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's "The Rum Diary". I can't wait to see it because it's a great book and Depp is so talented. I expect good things from this one.

I think Johnny Depp is a good actor, but I can't really say I consider him a great actor. My old drama teacher would definitely be appalled to hear Depp compared favorably to Dustin Hoffman.

As far as Blow is concerned, a great movie? Maybe a good movie, but the plot gets a little tired towards the end. Just didn't really impress me that much one way or the another or I'd remember more about it.

In general Depp has a tendency towards playing eccentric socially inept characters, which in this way it can be argued that many of his characters are quite similar.

Finally I can't see the whole range argument when compared to actors like Daniel Day-Lewis and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Daniel Day-Lewis giving an amazing performances in My Left Foot, Gangs of New York and There Will Be Blood, to name a few (Although he isn't the most prolific of actors).

At any rate let the flamming commence.

I like Depp and almost every film that he’s been in. He seems to take a unique approach to acting, picking roles where he can express himself artistically in some way, as apposed to being driven by a desire to be acclaimed as an actor.

desire to be acclaimed as an actor?

I'm really not even sure what that means... The majority of acclaimed actors act because they love it and are incredibly dedicated to it. I don't really think they act to receive awards... I could see the argument being made that some actors act to make ridiculous amounts of money... but the dedication that has to go into doing an utterly superb acting job is ridiculous.

Come on dude, you’re telling me that you believe there are no actors/actresses who have ever chased Oscar winning roles?

Relax Smiler, I’m not making a crack at “acclaimed actors” I’m just saying from my perspective, Jonnhy Depp doesn’t seem to care what anyone else thinks, and chooses roles regardless of any kind of stigma they may have, that is all.

Although I reserve all right to be wrong.

It was his role in a lesser known film that introduced me to who I think is the best actor of his generation, and getting better. If you missed him in the "Libertine", watch it. The opening and closing remarks by his noble/hedonistic character are worth the viewing. He has revealed great courage in taking on roles that swing from one end of the spectrum to the other (I.e. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, "Shooter" in "The Secret Window" and a Keith Richard's incarnation as Pirate Sparrow). I am always enthusiastic in waiting for his next project.

He's an extremely talented actor, and due to being emotionally strong, he can play such varied roles every year without losing his acting skills.
