I remember when his cancer was announced a few weeks ago, reports on his prognosis for recovery were optimistic, so I was surprised and saddened to hear the news today.
His stage and film career were the very model of excellent work of the highest standards and of course he was well-known for TV's Law & Order, but I will always have the greatest affection for his performance of Lumiere in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

Any words I say never give justice to the lives of the departed. My wife has loved "Law and Order" for years, so I realize that's where most people recognize Orbach from. I just want to mention he was very memorable in a few other movies, besides his great turn in "Beauty and the Beast". To see Orbach's better film performances, watch "Prince of the City", "F/X", "Dirty Dancing" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors."
