To be honest, I love De Niro and Pacino, but neither of them have done a movie in the last 10 years that could stand up to their best work in the 70s and 80s.

If true, the title of this thread may be more appropriately described as:

His bit role on The West Wing as Asst. Secretary of State Albie Duncan was quite stellar. I also highly recommend seeing his Mark Twain. I was lucky enough to see it live.

In my opinion, no one could ever replace those two great actors...Both are unique and appealing. I think they are irreplaceable. New actors might just get close to their achievements but they will never take the place of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino... Smiler

I disagree. I'm a much bigger Pacino fan, so I'll only speak to his roles. Starting 10 years ago in '97, he had four very strong performances to close out the 90's in Donnie Brasco, The Devil's Advocate, The Insider, and Any Given Sunday. True, The Devil's Advocate is sort of a hokey film, but Pacino completely carried that movie with his over-the-top portrayal of the devil. The other three, save maybe Any Given Sunday, weren't necessarily "Pacino movies," but he played very strong supporting roles.

Since then, the only performances of note were in Insomnia, and his role as Roy Cohn in Angels in America.

Well it's hard to say, cuz they are irreplaceble, I mean we'll never see act like Michael Corleone, Tony Montan...or De Niro in Taxi driver, Ragin Bull....
Anyway I think Sean Penn, Andy Garcia, Tom Hanks, Kevin Costner, Denzel Washington...etc they are talented, but they're under the shadow of this two megastars.
