My vote goes to Jodie Foster. Silence of the Lambs. That's it! The rest are shit. She did that one movie with Denzel a couple year ago, but it was Denzel who made it successful. She is over-rated, period.
Originally posted by PaddyG: I actually thought she was better in The Accused.
Perhaps. But it's no secret that her claim to fame was "silence of the lambs". That was the movie that gave her credibility. Credibility that she doesn't deserve. She belongs in movies with Eric Roberts, not Denzel or Anthony Hopkins.
Jodie Foster from her filmography definitely has had long history of experience in both television and film. While she may be over-rated, she has some decent films to her credit:
Little Man Tate (1991)(also directed) Nell (1994)(also produced) Contact (1997) Anna and the King (1999)
Her more recent films Panic Room (2002) and Flightplan (2005) were more mainstream thrillers. With Inside Man (2006), her scripted role was pretty limited unfortunately, not her acting.
I won't rule her out just yet as an actress. For me the jury is still out. "Most" over-rated actor, not for me.

hudson Guru Posted 22 February 2008 02:07 PM Hide Post So tabuno, who is the most over-rated actor? Other than Jodie Foster that is.
I know it's easy to appear to tear down somebody's bold assertion, at least try to. I commend you for your decision to come to a judgment and state it publically, particularly on such a delicate topic as a judgment not on a movie but on an actual person. I can't right off come up with a "most" over-rated actor off hand because I haven't focused on the topic nor kept the topic and my answer in mind long enough over time to remember. To give you a reasonable answer would require me to go over a lot of actors and actresses...a pretty difficult, time-consuming process. The best I can offer you is that now that the topic has been asked of me, I can attempt to keep the actor or actress in mind when I recall my feelings about their rating and then decide if I can report it back to you sometime later. I remember that I have thought that a number of actor's have been praised mightily that I have really thought otherwise...probably it's going to be one of the comedians (the bad ones) in one of those dumb comedies that surprisingly a lot of people really enjoyed. But what happens is that bad movie goes out of mind pretty quickly because I don't want to think about it.

Jesus, I thought someone would say Daniel Day-Lewis by now, who I think deserves every ounce of credit he receives.
It's interesting that you would mention Mr. Day-Lewis because besides his performance in There Will Be Blood, I can't remember much about his performances in:
The Last of the Mohicans (1992). My Left Foot (1989). The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988). A Room with a View (1985) Gandhi (1982)
Thus, his past performance apparently didn't make much of an impression on me, they didn't stand out. But for 2007, Mr. Day-Lewis' performance in There Will Be Blood, I am impressed by his character and his intensity, acting on the screen. Thus, while can't say that overall Mr. Day-Lewis has an impressive filmography that has made him stand out, I do consider him a prime candidate for this Best Actor at the Academy Awards.

You somehow missed In the Name of the Father, The Boxer and Gangs of New York? Plus you have no recollection of his Academy Award winning performance in My Left Foot?? I continue to take your opinions with a grain of salt.

at first i thought tabuno's post on Day-Lewis was a stab at comedy but when i realized that it wasn't i was left speechless. How can one say that he was forgettable in My Left Foot? I thought back then that he should've won the oscar for his role as Butcher Bill in Gangs of New York. And don't forget My Beautiful Laundrette
then again, i'm biased: Daniel Day-Lewis can do NO wrong in my book

speaking of denzel washington, i'd call him overrated. he's pretty much does the whole quiet-quiet-quiet-yell thing that pacino did a lot late in his career and everybody praises him hysterically for it. don't take that as a criticism of pacino though, i'm not nearly so brazen. i suppose that the one character he plays he does well though.

If you want to talk about latter-day Jack, I'd agree with you a bit more, but since he's probably my third fave male actor of all-time (after Humphrey Bogart and Alec Guinness), I'll let Nicholson's filmography of performances plead its own case.
Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, Carnal Knowledge, The Last Detail, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Reds, Terms of Endearment, Prizzi's Honor, Broadcast News, Ironweed, Hoffa, Wolf, As Good As It Gets, About Schmidt, The Departed.
Maybe a couple of those are over-the-top, but no more so than his performances in The Shining, The Witches of Eastwick, Batman and A Few Good Men, and I know many people who like some of those (including you.)

^^^^^^since I live in Southern California and therefore get Lakers coverage, the announcers are constantly revering Jack whenever the obligatory camera shot occurs during every game.
Don't get me wrong, he's a good actor, I just think many people (especially around Hollywood) bring him into consideration for greatest actor ever, which is just not the case.

It's actually possible I may have stayed away from My Left Foot which would be a good reason for me not remembering Daniel Day-Lewis in the movie. It's also possible that I have a bias when it comes to performances by actors of individuals with mental or physical disabilities. So often such performances come automatically with some form of pity or extra points for how supposedly we are supposed to feel extra tenderness in order to make ourselves feel better and that we have made a politically correct choice in our decision-making process otherwise we can be accused of discrimination and labeled as callous and uncaring. It's a difficult ethical and aesthetic issue when it comes to the presentation of people that are out of the set norms and boundaries of the majority of the population.

As a victim of an -ism (racism), I would think you would relate to a real person's "-ism" being depicted (even by someone as lowly as an actor). I don't believe political correctness has anything to do with honest emotion. Giving someone "points" is certainly no more honorable than taking "points" away.

Daniel Day-Lewis is easily one of the best actors of the current film industry. I'm not even going to elaborate on this.. because if you don't realize this it really is your loss.
