Just came to this site today and had to join! Looks like a GREAT place!
Somewhat in the same vein as the "favorite character" topic, I'm wondering what you all consider to be "great acting" roles. The film/movie itself doesn't have to have been spectacular, or even good for that matter. I'm looking for what you all consider to have been "great acting."
As an example, a couple of mine would be:
Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lector Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch
Any takers? I'd love to know what you all think, and just want to get the ball rolling with some of you before I add more to my list.

Thank you for your response tabuno. I've not seen this movie, but have seen Leonardo in other things and do think he is usually pretty good. Guess it's time to rent it. Cate Blanchett played K. Hepburn in this film, didn't she? And, if memory serves me, won a best supporting actress Oscar for the role. Is that correct, or don't you know?

It's eerie but I had been thinking about Cate Blanchett's performance when I began thinking about responding to your post and the odd thing is I didn't really recollect what performance I was considering and now that you mention her, of course, it comes back clearly now, her performance in The Aviator was very good and brought strong resemblances to Katherine Hepburn.
Another unusual and brilliant, under-rated performance comes from Christian Slater in He Was A Quiet Man (2007) in a bittersweet movie about the insidious effects of corporate politics and personality disorders.

This is yet another movie you mention that I have not seen. I did search it though, and read a summary of the film, and it does seem like it would be a good movie to watch.
I love character studies. There's nothing better than watching an actor really "get into the character" and play him/her well. But, I think too, many people overrate what is actually a good performance. (Not necessarily anyone here, more the folks I know in general)
This may be why I've always been so drawn to actors like Gene Hackman and Jack Lemmon. They are both very adept at getting into the "meat" of the character. I find that very appealing.
One criteria I use for "great acting" is that a performance and presentation is so out of character that the actor or actress is literally not identifiable in the role. At the same time, the performance of the role is compelling, appealing, and consistently riveting as a personality - many layered with depth, an intelligent dialogue, mannerisms and behavior (as nonverbal is 90% of communication). Jack Lemmonis an excellent choice, and I saw his performance in The Days of Wine and Roses (1962) for the first time. Mr. Lemmon having had a number of performances as comedian, a very difficult genre, he has provided a splendent range of talent such as in The Odd Couple (1968) and The Front Page (1974). Even his performance in The China Syndrome (1979) had a certain off-balanced, edgy component. Even Gene Hackman has a range of talent from drama to comedy as well, though he appears much more comfortable in drama and action-thrillers.

The last time I checked, this topic was about the great acting on SVU, not a place to continue the ongoing debate on SAG contract negotiations. New Media issues are not the subject of this thread, and I am certainly NOT one of those who "recommended watching SVU on itunes, hulu, or other websites."
Excuse me if I don't have the time to watch TV shows on an ipod, twitter to friends, or spend all day surfing websites. Contributing to this board is my only "guilty pleasure," and I hope that my posts offer something more substantive than playing my with my ipod on the subway or "under the bus."
You discovered a typo Dawg, good for you. I doubt that neglecting to add an apostrophe to "you're" is going to alter my message to any intelligible, discernable degree, do you?

P.S.-- You stated that you "Guest starred a few times" on SVU. Which episodes?
The last time I heard, this particular forum was for movies not television series.
