It's common knowledge that Ed Harris is a great actor, but on seeing "A History of Violence" for the second time, I realized just how creepy his is in that film.
Specifically, when he's telling Viggo Mortensen to get in the car, he gave me chills!
Also, the run in with Maria Bello at the mall was great.
Love that guy.

I'm an Ed Harris fan, too. Two of my favorite roles are when he plays the straight-arrow good guy in The Right Stuff and Milk Money. I also loved him as Gene Kranz in Apollo 13. Another role was as a priest in a movie called The Third Miracle. It wasn't a supergreat movie, but the acting was very good.

Ed Harris may be putting himself into a few character boxes as his last role in A History of Violence (2005) echoes a number of earlier roles he has played:

The Rock (1996). A crazed military commander.

The Truman Show (1998). A crazed scientist/director.

Enemy at the Gates (2000). A Nazi sniper.

A Beautiful Mind (2001). A imaginary covert military operations manager.

But his breadth of acting, unlike some actors hasn't been so narrow that he is likely to be boxed in for long. Some of his memorable roles that I appreciated included:

Apollo 13 (1995). A NASA Space Operations Director.

Pollock (2000). A internationally renowned artist.

I have a great appreciation for the talent of Ed Harris. I, like you, do not think he will remain "boxed in" for long. He has a tremendous ability to play sensitive, tender characters. One of my favorite performances by Harris was not on the big screen, but on HBO's film "Empire Falls". I loved it so much I bought the DVD.

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

Yeah THE RIGHT STUFF -- a terrific film -- was where I first noticed Harris. That "good guy" he was playing was John Glen. Another early Harris role was in PLACES IN THE HEART, a film I liked when I originally saw it, but that I don't think holds up all that well.

And a good call regarding the little-seen THIRD MIRACLE, which I thought was a flat out terrific film about faith and miracles. Every year a film or two get lost during the avalanche of films that get released at the end of the year and THIRD MIRACLE was one of them.
