I will try to stick to the postive here and say that I thought he was great in Interview With The Vampire as well as Magnolia. I still think that he did a great job in Top Gun too! I don't think that he is a strong enough actor to carry a film on his own and that is why I thought he was excellent in the above mentioned films. Casting him as Iron Man would be a mistake, Tony Stark was not a smiley kind of guy.
"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
Pretentious???? Tom Cruise!?!?! Noooo---hes, from what Ive heard, one of the most generous celebrities working today. AND, he has some serious acting chops, to boot. Just check out "Magnolia" if you dont believe me---or "Minority Report", "Top Gun", "Eyes Wide Shut", "Interview with a Vampire"----err...hell, watch em all!
Tom's just a little too crazy for me. He's always too ready to spaz out in all his roles. When acting angry, he goes insane. When acting sad, he goes insane. When acting happy...he goes insane. He flips out way too often. Like a ninja.

I think that he stands out above the Ben Afflecks and the Nicholas Cages of this world because he knows how to pick a movie. I have been trying to think of bad movie choices that he has made and the only one I can come up with is MI:2.

I think we all know Tom got screwed out of an oscar for Born on the 4th. OK, Daniel Day-Lewis was good in My Left Foot, but this one Cruise should have won. Like Jakal said, if he keeps making good movie choices and pushing his limits, he will get one.

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back. -Face
Hey, the man's gotta eat. I'm am really glad that John Woo won't be on for the third. He SUCKS! I can't believe that I used to love Face/Off so much. Of course, it was high school, so it could have been the drugs. Anyhoo!!! I love the first one and I hope it will live on in the third. I hate seeing what happened to the Bond series. It slowly turned from a cool spy genre to a cheesy action genre.

At first I thought Tom Cruise was pretty much always the same character, tough action hero, until I saw some other movies as rain man and collateral recently where he has more of a character and my respect rose for him.

I really enjoyed Collateral. It was by Mann who is excellent. It wasnt neccesarily that original of a plot but it was a character study and Mann did an excellent job of making it into a great movie.

I finally saw Collateral and thought it was great. Mann is brilliant and Tom Cruise very convincing and very funny. "you killed him!" -"I shot him, the bullets and the fall killed him"
Anyway, I thought the ending was slightly weak though but it's OK since the rest of the film is excellent!
He is one of the few actors who actually deserve all of the acclaim. I recently saw "The Last Sameria" (sp?)and remembered how utterly convincing Tom is in every role he takes.

Tom Cruise is everything a star should be. He has obvious sex appeal and flaunts it in intelligent well-chosen films ("Eyes Wide Shut" or "Risky Business"). He can definately act ("Magnolia" or "Collateral"). AND most importantly he's a phenomanal action star ("Minority Report"). Usually action stars are just muscle brained idiots---not Cruise!
Another old thread I'm repsonding to this quiet Monday. I guess I sort of think of Tom Cruise as a guilty pleasure, although I'm not exactly sure why since some of his movies are pretty good. A few of my favorites are (among others) Top Gun, The Color Of Money, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia. I am a little leery of MI:3. It has a cool cast, but then again the first two did as well.
