I have recently been looking to extend my country catalogue and I've always loved Nelson
I own Red headed stranger and stardust but was wondering where to go next.

I've heard phases and changes is great. Any feedback?

You're off to a great start with Red Headed Stranger and Stardust. Phases and Changes is great as is the album that preceded it, Shotgun Willie and along with RHS completes one of the great trifectas in country music.

What about expanding out into the other Outlaw Country albums of the 70s? If you like Willie Nelson's music from that time, you might also want to check out Waylon Jennings' Dreaming My Dreams and Guy Clark's Old No. 1 to name only a couple.

Great stuff.

definately second the guy clark recommendation. That Album especially is awesome. As for Willie, I like the album from a couple years ago of early demos. It has some cool versions of a lot of his really classic songs that forshadow the outlaw stuff, but was recorded long before Red Headed Stranger or the others from that time period.

My favorite Willie album is "City of NewOrleans".

I'd also recommend Teatro (1998). It's probably my favorite Willie Nelson album of the '90s with Spirit (1996) and Across The Borderline (1992) as runners-up.

I would like to second the recommendations for Shot Gun Willie (1973) and Teatro (1998) - and add Willie Nelson sings Kristofferson (1979) as being one of his best.

I also liked Milk Cow Blues (2000)

I love Willie. The three albums I have listened to all the way through are Red Headed Stranger (excellent) Stardust (excellent) and the one I was looking forward to the most, Phases & Stages (Eh...) Everything about it screamed "YOU'LL LOVE ME!" but it just didn't really do it for me honestly (on an interesting side-note the cover always reminds me of the MBV - Loveless cover Smiler ) Didn't find it nearly as exciting as Red Headed Stranger or Stardust.

The one I want to go after the most right now is Yesterday's Wine, which is supposed to be like a lost classic or something.

ditto what Lynn Tate posted. There is lots of great stuff to treat your ears in his comments. Try some Roseanne Cash.

Yesterday's Wine is an excellent album. I enjoy it more than Phases and Stages but not quite as much as Red Headed Stranger.

I may be in the minority, but I would stay away from Teatro, unless you like Daniel Lanois. Personally, I think he's ruined a lot of great records. Otherwise I would second just about every other recommendation here.
