I really like humorous nonfiction essays - they really give you an opportunity to swim around in the author's brain...you know, if you're into that sort of creepy stuff. I think these are some of the better books in the genre right now:

Laurie Notaro "The Idiot Girls Action-Adventure Club"
Amy Sedaris "I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence"

I like David Sedaris a lot. Not quite in the same category, but similar and also great, is Bill Bryson. He writes travel narratives, funny and insightful and just interesting. My favorite is his Australian book, "In A Sunburned Country."

Common, if you like travel writing give Pico Iyer a try. Any of the Best American Travel Writing anthologies have good stuff in them too...
