This is not a thread to pick on metal. Rather, I just wanted to say that I've sort of been revitalized on metal recently. What am I liking about metal these days? Well, after going through an extended Shoegaze/MBV phase over the last year or so, I am now discovering the tremendous contemporary influence of this music in metal - mainly in black metal (Wrath of the Weak, Xasthur/Malefic) and doom metal (Nadja) as far as I can tell. Sure, Burzum covered this territory years ago, but there haven't been that many bands (IMHO) that followed in their (his) footsteps, and I can really live without the satanic/neo-nazi lyrics. Just give me discordant distortion and gloom, and I'm a happy camper.

I'm just gonna start a running log of what I'm listening to...maybe it will give some ideas...
I already started a new HoF thread, so let me throw out something else...Behold the Arctopus. I'm listening to this for the first time on MySpace, after reading the Stylus review. This is some cool, technical, proggy, metal-ass shiznit. Awesome! This is what Dillinger Escape Plan should be doing.

There are a lot of good bands out there like that. For instance check out About A Plane Crash, The Devil Wears Prada, Dance Club Massacre, etc. There's some good new shit out there.

Off subject: My friend and I used to dance on my roof to Burzum at night, it was a ton O' fun.
I think the prime shoegazer-inspired metal comes from Jesu. It's Justin Broadrick from Napalm Death/Godflesh and maybe it's not really metal anymore, but it is definitely gloomy and heavy.
