Duncan, don't you distinguish between metal and hardcore?

Metal is a genre. Subgenres of Metal include Heavy, Death, Doom, Grindcore, Industrial, etc.

Here's my list (a little bit of everything):

1) Black Sabbath
2) Carcass
3) Cathedral
4) Metallica
5) Faith No More

It's hard to leave out Mastodon and Neurosis - but you asked for five, so I gave you five.

I think everyone has a different view of what constitutes a Metal Band but these would be my top 5:

1)AC/DC
2)Black Sabbath
2)Iron Maiden
2)Judas Priest
2)Led Zeppelin

Some might not consider Led Zeppelin or AC/DC to be metal but I would rate most of their songs to be Metal Songs.

Briz, we've both listed some old-ass bands here. So, what do you listen to these days, like in the last 5 years or so that's new?

To be honest, there hasn't really been any band to come out this decade that I'm totally head-over-heels for. But here's a list of some fairly recent bands I've listened to and liked and, in some cases, loved:

Blood Freak - Although recent, this is more of a throwback to old-school death/grind, but it's really a lot of fun. Chock full of horror movie references and themes.
Lykathea Aflame – This band only released one album, Elvenefris, back in 2000, but it's one of the best death/grind metal albums of all time.
Spawn of Possession - Pretty good technical death metal.
Necrophagist - Really solid tech-death, sometimes borders on wankery, though.
Ephel Duath - Weird, jazzy, experimental grindcore.
!T.O.O.H.! - See above.
Deeds of Flesh - Straight-up brutal death metal.
Wormed - Very brutal, sometimes indecipherable.
Psycroptic - These guys would have seemed really fast and heavy in the old days. Now they seem moderately heavy and rather mid-tempo. Pretty solid riffs, though.
Deathspell Omega - I guess I'd call this experimental black metal.
Pig Destroyer - Everyone seems familiar with these guys for some reason. The grind band that indie kids (or at least indie sites) like, I guess.
Psyopus - Unrelenting, technical, brutal grind
1349 - Punishing, modern black metal.

As you can see, my tastes have veered away from anything outside the extreme metal scene. As much as I love 80s and early 90s thrash, I can's seem to stomach their descendants (i.e. Nevermore and Lamb of God). For all I know, you've heard of all these bands. But then again, maybe you've only heard of one or two. What have you listened to in metal recently?

I've only listened to Deathspell Omega, Pig Destroyer, and 1349 from your list. I'll have to check out the others. In addition to those, Cephalic Carnage, Agorophobic Nosebleed, Wrath of the Weak, Cryptopsy. I heard Xasthur for the first time last week, and had a very favorable impression. Other than that, I basically tend to stick with my old stuff, as not much has surpassed early nineties material. To wit,

Pungent Stench
Disembowelment
Disharmonic Orchestra
Autopsy
Flesh Grinder (maybe mid-90's? I can't remember)
Brujeria (a joke band - but still)
Summoning
Burzum
Cannibal Corpse
Morbid Angel
Dissection
Asphyx

I guess I like the classics. I never got into Isis, although I loved Neurosis early on (Souls at Zero is one of my all-time favorite albums - any genre). I really can't stand Arch Enemy (give it up - it's not Carcass), Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir (well, the first couple of albums were pretty good), and their spawning.

Evidentally not!

I'd forgotten I'd posted that list. Looking through it, I'd probably make a few adjustments, but I still consider Nailbomb etc to be metal. It's all heavy stuff with the traditional crunchy guitars and anger.

I always went for the metal bands that did something different with the genre. As such, a lot of them could be classed as 'crossover' music.

Well, I enjoy Cephalic Carnage and absolutely love Cryptopsy. None so Vile might be my favorite death/grind album of all time. I'm also a big fan of Burzum and early Cannibal Corpse (for as much shit as he gets, I can't help but love Chris Barnes).

When it comes to black metal, almost without fail my favorites are early to mid-90s releases from Norwegian bands like Emperor, Immortal, Darkthrone, and Mayhem. I also like some of the folksy and medieval black metal offshoots like Summoning and Ulver. Bands like Cradle of Filth and their ilk disgust me. I'm somewhat of an old-school black metal elitist in that regard.

As far as Swedish death goes, I enjoy Dissection's first two releases and At the Gates. But as a subgenre, it's not really my thing, so my knowledge is somewhat limited.

I can't fucking believe no one has mentioned Slayer here yet! Reign In Blood is a classic by any standard at this point.
