First and foremost, Dethklok rules this title.
With that out of the way, I'd have to honestly say that in regards to sheer energy and intensity - both on albums and at live shows - I have to go ahead and commit treason by giving runner-up to...
Slipknot.
Yes, Slipknot. Crucify me all you want, I have yet to experience the same level of intensity at a concert than when I saw Slipknot at the Pledge of Allegiance tour in 2001. Since then, I've seen Slayer, Hatebreed, Arch Enemy, Machine Head, Throwdown, God Forbid, and a dozen other bands - nothing has come close to the energy Slipknot - and their fans (even the the stupid wannabe jocks) - output during a show. And yes, while there are bands that are heavier/darker/faster/gorier/and etc., a whole album of speed and double-bass/blastbeats/solo wankery (I'm looking at you, Dragonforce)/ridiculously-over-the-top-gory-lyrics gets boring quickly. Plus, I find non-stop speed/everything-else-I-just-mentioned is kind of hard to headbang/mosh to. Slipknot's more about rythm - they find a groove, make it evil, and then sledgehammer it into your skull. I'd be far more concerned about one of their members burning my face off. than any of the members of the more extreme bands. I'd expect those people to rip my face off, then feast on my innards while drinking my blood from the cup they've made out my skull.
So, yeah...Slipknot. I don't care what anyone else thinks of them, that's how I feel. Like 'em or not, they're pretty brutal. And I do say that with some bias, but whatever.
Honorable mentions:
-Bloodbath (Nightmares Made Flesh is awesome) -The Project Hate MCMXCIX
-Amon Amarth
-Napalm Death
-Behemoth
-Dry Kill Logic
-DevilDriver
-Finntroll (they win the "Most Brutal Pagan Folk Metal" title)
-Tortured Conscience (If you haven't heard of them, go find the album A Brutal Christmas - The Season in Chaos...you will never look at "The Little Drummer Boy" the same way ever again)
