Oh, I forgot to mention Mastodon, who are probably at the top of my list with Remission and Leviathan. They lost a little brutality with Blood Mountain.

Carcass (Reek, Symphonies, Necroticism) Cathedral (well, really just FoE was "brutal") Disembowelment (one album only, but it was one of the best ever) Cannibal Corpse (first several albums) Autopsy (pretty much entire catalog) Burzum (again, early stuff) Summoning (early stuff) Brujeria (yeah, it's a joke band, but it's still brutal) Neurosis (especially on Souls at Zero) Godflesh (been said already) Metallica (Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master Dimmu Borgir (only first couple of albums, so don't make fun of me!)
Now we're cooking! So much good stuff here. Especially Brujeria - joke or no joke, they know the true value of brutality.

Yeah, Remission and Leviathan are excellent... Blood Mountain was weak, I love mastodon but I don't even listen to the album.

Duncan, one more for you - Pungent Stench! This was one of my favorites in high school.

"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
Although Suffocation, in my opinion, is doubtless the best brutal metal band on the planet, bands like Disgorge (from Mexico...or the Disgorge from the U.S., for that matter) and Devourment are definitely more skull-crushingly brutal.

2007 is turning out to be a great year for brutal. Neurosis, Pig Destroyer, and Cephalic Carnage all have put out brutally terrific albums.

That new Pig Destroyer is definitely top ten material for me. Fucking great riffage and unforgiving tempo. Best metal record I've heard in a long time.
Well, everyone is pretty much on target with it. Dimmu, Mastodon, Job for A Cowboy with their new album is pretty good. Just fast ass riffs that will blow your mind to hell. Lamb of God as well.

Mastodon's more heavy metal I found. When I think brutal, I think Death Metal and Grindcore. -Cryptopsy -Anaal Nathrakh -Behemoth -Dying Fetus -Nile -Morbid Angel -Necrophagist -Pig Destroyer -Vader -1349
Nile is pretty good, I watched this video on myspace of George Kolias doing the worlds fastest double bass. He's pretty good I gotta say. Necrophagist is helluh good too.
