I hope you're joking. How could a metal band that put out a disco album be considered "the most BRUTAL metal band ever?"
It's hard to pick this one, though. Many metal bands that once upon a time could be considered brutal sold out eventually, including my favorite of all time: Carcass.

Whoa broseph, I hope you're joking about not realizing I was joking... I know sarcasm is hard to catch over a forum, but I figured this was obvious sarcasm (esp. since I believe we've discussed Dimmu, Burzum and Mastodon).
Anyways, I have no clue who the most brutal metal band would be because I don't listen to metal for brutality, that's what hardcore punk is for.

And p.s. I HATE KISS!

For me I think it has to be the 70s and 80s Seattle shock-metal group "The Mentors"... their crowning achievement? Probably 1985's album "You Axed For It" which contained gems such as: "Sandwich of Love", "Clap Queen", "Wine You, Dine You, Sixty-Nine You", "The Four F Club", and "Herpes 2".
If that doesn't win your vote for most brutal metal band, maybe the band members' names will: Guitar - Sickie Wifebeater Bass - Dr. Heathen Scum Vocals/Drums - El Duce
But, honestly, how can you beat the hXc black metal face paint of Kiss? Esp. (Paul Stanley's?) kitty-kat face. Anything that cute has to be irony to the max, and in the process push it over the edge to the "so effin hardcore that if you were to look at them again you'd wanna beat an old woman with a club" range on the hardcore scale.
I think it was Peter Criss who wore the cat make-up. If memory serves, Paul Stanley had a star on his face and Ace Frehley had some sort of silver glittery nonsense.
I think Gene Simmons was supposed to be a bat. They should've just written the word 'prick' on his forehead with a marker - it would've suited him better.

Yes, the Butthole Surfers are great - I really like 'independent worm saloon' - but are they a metal band? Hmmm....
I think brutality in metal can be heard in the aggressively palm muted guitars and drums being hit way too hard. The vocals have to be so low that your house collapses and the bass is usually a massive distorted rumble where you can't hear any notes. Usually these bands are really ugly and they couldn't give a crap about appealing to the mainstream. Their lyrical content is about the world being a toilet. The music has two speeds - 'tortoise with a hangover' and '666 mph'. It has one constant dynamic - stupidly loud. To cap it all, they have to sound like they really mean it.If it's not METAL, they aren't interested.
In short - this band is the sonic equivalent of being repeatedly bashed over the head by an 8 foot caveman with a breezeblock nailed to a cricketbat.
Pantera are a good candidate - They were masters of brutal metal. They just kept getting heavier with every release (up until the last one). Really thick, chunky guitar.
However, they can't compete with the sheer extremity of Napalm Death, Brutal truth, Nailbomb, early Carcass and Godflesh - for me that's proper brutal metal.

Sepultura is pretty brutal (The Max Cavelera stuff, not the new stuff so much). They have this militiristic sound to them. I always thing of a street riot or some guy throwing a molotoff cocktail when I think of Sepultura.
I guess Helmet isn't technically metal, but they have some killer heavy riffs.

Nah, they're a post-punk/noise-rock band, but listen to "Jimi" off of Hairway to Steven. That shit's heavy. I was just trying to say that I could think of some noise bands that could compete for "master of brutality " with most metal bands.
I guess how you feel about this topic depends on how you categorize "brutal." Is it the heaviest, or is it the fastest, or is it the most technical, etc.?
For most intense/fastest I'd have to go with something like Agoraphobic Nosebleed. Since they have a drum machine and some of you might feel that is cheating, I also nominate Pig Destroyer who are also nearly as fast but have a human drummer. Earlier Emperor stuff like In the Nightside Eclipse is pretty fast and so is some of the earlier grindcore stuff that influenced Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed like Napalm Death's first album or Repulsion.
If we were to go on heaviest, I don't think it gets much more dense than SunnO))). If you want something with drums and slightly more uptempo but not by much I'd go with either Sleep or Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine. Lots of that Southern Lord shit is super heavy doom.
Fun topic. I'm interested in seeing where this goes.

I'm mainly concentrating on sheer brutality, although heaviness is an important factor within that. I don't know about tempo - I've heard bands sound brutal in both fast and slow music.
The technical aspect is often irelevant - it can get in the way. Violence is rarely a carefully considered action, so the music should hit you wear it hurts with the minimum of fuss. There's no time to stop in awe of amazing fret wizardry, where a 4 ton riff will suffice. Early Dillinger Escape Plan are a notable exception.
IG Farben was spot on with Max-era Sepultura and I agree with jon on Pig Destroyer. I'll have to check out Agoraphobic Nosebleed - great band name.
Another band that qualify are Raging Speedhorn. 'Thumper' is a pounding track. The main riff is so simple, but it totally flattens you.
I love this sort of music with a passion - there's something almost tribal about it. I'll be checking out a lot of the suggestions.

I 2nd Agorophobic Nosebleed and Pig Destroyer, as far as current bands. Some old ones (you know, early 90's), too:
Carcass (Reek, Symphonies, Necroticism) Cathedral (well, really just FoE was "brutal") Disembowelment (one album only, but it was one of the best ever) Cannibal Corpse (first several albums) Autopsy (pretty much entire catalog) Burzum (again, early stuff) Summoning (early stuff) Brujeria (yeah, it's a joke band, but it's still brutal) Neurosis (especially on Souls at Zero) Godflesh (been said already) Metallica (Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master Dimmu Borgir (only first couple of albums, so don't make fun of me!)
