Ok, I hate these guys, and it's all because of their drummer. Does anybody else think its lame that every song, during the entire thing, the drummer is just throwing in fill after fill? That's not drumming, you are not the only member of the band. Maybe if the drummer made a solo album then it would be acceptable but ITS A BAND. The purpose of the drummer is to keep the backbone of the song and hold everything together, not DOUBLE BASS KICK CRAZY FIVE MINUTE DRUM SOLO YEAH!!

I can agree, that the drumming isn't steady enough to create much of a melody in the song. That's really the thing though, they don't want melody or a back beat. It has a math music edge to it even though they probably don't think about it.
A lot of metal music traditionally comes from blues but also classical music. Usually similarities are drawn to Wagner and Beethoven. But Mastodon's classical influence would be stuff like Schoenberg and Charles Ives. Though there are bands that take this style much further. I do listen to Mastodon and others on occasion. I love melodic music but sometimes i dig hearing the unexpected.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. The drummer is Mastodon.

Well... Because Mastodon can easily be described as "Tech-Metal," that's a bit of a ridiculous claim. I mean, that's like saying Botch's guitarist would use too much finger-tapping and that it took over the songs. I mean, I've been playing drums for basically my entire life, and Mastodon's drummer is one of thsoe unattainable gods of drums, like Zach Hill or Brian Chippendale or the dude in Dillinger.
And the drums are the backbone to Mastodon. Are we listening to the same band? Maybe you got some Dream Theatre by mistake.

well the reason for threading this was to see if I was alone, which I am. Oh, and tell me I don't listen to metal again, and your front yard will be littered with blood spewing corpses while I ride around your house on a flaming chariot obliterating your eardrums with sonic RAGE.

Here's a better question about Mastodon: Why does that dude have tattoos on his face? I never understood those, but i don't really think i like it.
And here's another one: does their drummer have three arms? I think he does. In fact, he's a friggin' octopus. And the drum noodling award goes to Zach Hill, someone who i consider the Van Halen of drums (and not in a good way, because i hate Van Halen)
