good lord, are there that many viking metal bands, or are you just listing bands you like.

now, does viking metal usually refer to the lyrical content, or is there like a viking metal sound? I always thought of it as a bunch of dudes pretending to be vikings (I'm sure that's not what its about, its just what the name makes me think of)

well some of that is black/death metal. Viking metal does have a distinct sound though. Usually Odinist bands etc. What kind of metal do you listen to?

A Crown of Amaranth is under no circumstances Viking anything. Maybe Viking ambient? Hmmm...nope, I still can't feel it. After all, I AM A CROWN OF AMARANTH!

Least of the bands you listed are really Viking Metalbands.
Turisas, Naglfar and Thyrfing are viking metalbands, in these cases you can conclude from the names.
Bands like In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and Soilwork are "Götheburger Schule", so called Melodic Deathmetal.
Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child, Immortal, Satyricon (Only fuckin' blackmetal band on a major label), Venom, Dark Funeral, Emperor, Burzum are Black Metalbands
and so on...
Even if you just listed the bands you like, you just seem to be a little unselective.

Burzum is not Viking metal? That's news to me. The only band more Viking in my mind would Bathory.

Burzum?
Burzum is probably "the" balck metal band. Varg Vikernes, most of the time bandleader but sent to prison for 21 years because of murder and burning churches, was a kind of symbol for the "National Socialist Black Metal" (NSBM) trend. An extremly right winged trend of the black metal scene. Although he mostly sung (or screamed) about germanic mythology, Burzum in fact is no viking-metal band. Viking metal also does contain black metal elements, but also a lot of folk metal elements. The lyrics are mainly about vikings and their myths, tales and battles. Further germanic mythology isn't equal with scandinavian. Vikings are no teutons, and therefor also Burzum is no viking metal band.
Bathory is a viking/pagan metal band from sweden. Together with Enslaved they rank among the founders of viking metal.
Other famous bands would be:
Amon Amarth, Einherjer, Falkenbach, Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Mânegarm, Riger, Nomansland, Mithotyn, Unleashed, Thyrfing, Turisas, Windir, Týr, Wolfchant and Adorned Brood.

What do you categorize as folk metal? I like Ulver's Kveldssanger a lot, but I don't know of any other bands making songs like that.

Pretty much three of the bands that you mentioned are viking metal... the majority are in the death, black, death/black genres... I have to agree with Spleen on this. But if your into viking go out and pick up a norther, wintersun or even a ensiferum cd, generally they are imports (in the USA) and will run you up a pretty penny but they are pretty fucking brutal, and ive found that pretty much any band with a norse god in its name seems to be viking or folk metal.

motorhead? at the gates? 1349? dying fetus? is this a joke? most of these aren't viking metal bands at all. Listen to Finntroll and then Deicide and tell me they're in the same sub-genre. That IS a pretty sweet list though, regardless.

Half the bands you named aren't viking metal. But Borknagar, Vintersorg, (if you wanna call them viking metal) Finntroll, Bathory, Amon Amarth, and Enslaved.

In other words, yes.
