It was suggested that there should be a Mike Patton thread, so I started one. I don't quite know what to suggest for a topic on the man, but one obvious question always rears it's head -

Which release from Patton's massive back catalogue is the best one?

I always vote for California by Mr Bungle and Irony is a Dead Scene by The Dillinger Escape Plan, but it's a tough choice - so many brilliant and varied titles to choose from. I didn't even mention Loveage, but that's a whole new discussion in a whole new genre...

Cool...Irony is a Dead Scene by The Dillinger Escape Plan is a great CD. The Aphex Twin cover “Come To Daddy” rocks! I think it's more of a guest appearance for Patton on this EP but it defiantly should appear in this topic.
Also, I love Tomahawk - St (2001) especially "God Hates A Coward" it is a great track.

PS Duncan Black your stuff on Myspace is very impressive! Keep it up.

It's a toss up for me: The Real Thing vs. Mr. Bungle (s/t). They're both classic, and in my mind, at least, inseparable and incomparable masterpieces.

Cheers for the kind words PM3 - The first two Tomahawk albums were excellent releases (not so keen on the third one) - I've seen Tomahawk live a couple of times.

Real Thing and Mr Bungle - Interesting. I think I spent about three or four years listening to the first Mr Bungle album at least once a day - I drove most of my friends nuts with it.

I like The Real Thing too, but these days I prefer Angeldust - it just sounds a bit more weird and messed up. When it came out, I didn't like it very much and then rediscovered it years later.

With Mike Patton very much back in the media spotlight again, I thought I'd restart this thread.

Unless the American users of this forum are unaware - FAITH NO MORE ARE BACK! They are playing dates throughout Europe.

There have been no comments from the band and FNM have been typically awkard with issuing promo material. One video of a rehearsal has been issued, but everyone's head is just out of shot and the whole thing has been overdubbed with the theme tune from 'Benny Hill'. Business as usual then...

Considering the band often took public swipes at each other in the press and Patton dismissed their legacy as a 'nauseous carnival ride', what are we to make of this much anticipated reunion?

Good or bad, I feel it will be nothing less than fascinating.

Any thoughts?

I'd go with Irony Is A Dead Scene. He really fit with DEP, and they haven't seemed to be able to replicate anything near those four fantastic songs since.

I like Fantomas and Tomahawk. Not huge on Faith No More, but Mr. Bungle was great.

I Am Legend.

As a fan of Mr. Patton, I must admit that some of his stuff is pure shit. That X-Cutioners crap, Peeping Tom, Lovage, his work with Rahzel, giving birth to System of a Down. Yeeesh.

I'd go with you on the General Patton outing and Peeping Tom weren't too great.

But Loveage?! That was a great album! (if completely un-metal). It's not entirely fair to hold him responsible for System of a Down. We could say the same about Limp Bizkit, Slipknot and Korn. Patton's scathing hatred for those bands is no secret.

As for Rahzel - it's either genius or horse-shit. I enjoy the creativity of it all and the vocal gymnastics are impressive and humorous. Whether there are any good tunes in there is open to question but it's definitely entertaining.

I'm a Mike Patton fan, but not a connoisseur. It seems that there are many dissenting opinions...
I'm looking for a bare-bones synopsis of his catalogue.
Could someone explain the difference between all of the side projects?
