I've seen some posts about stoner metal bands, but i didn't see a whole topic so here it goes.
This is a style that's not for all as it is considered rather slow by a lot of metal fans but I dig...

Sleep - Holy Mountain
Acid Bath - Paegan Terrorism Tactics
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone

maybe not just stoner metal but also
Melvins - Houdini
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley

...as you can see my pics are a little dated any suggestions? Also, keep in mind good Doom, Sludge and Funeral bands as many of these artist have kind of a similar style.

Thanks

Well, you've got some good ones there already. As for doom, my favorites would be Cathedral, Trouble (ok, fair to say they were proto-doom), and of course, the mighty "D" - Disembowelment. But between Sleep and the Melvins that's as much stoner/sludge as I need for a lifetime. I don't think any other band has done it better than those two - so I don't expend much effort looking.

Oh man oh man oh man... seeing this thread excited me so much that I can't even think of anything except Boris (Heavy Rocks being my go to)... Acid Mothers Temple and their related groups put out some great stuff.. Starless and Bible Black Sabbath and 41st Century Man are my usual go-tos. Earthless is a great riff-based more classic sounding stoner band.

Sorry to say but I'm too high to come up with stoner rock... so, I'll have to get back to you.

Take bong rips til I'm back.

Oh, and you need to grab some more Sleep as well.. at least Jerusalem but Dopesmoker is decent also. Om is also pretty solid.. they're comin to me slowly haha

Grails?
Black Mountain?

I remember 'stoner' being associated with them but I'm not certain I'm playing in the same field as you guys.

I have "In the Future" by Black Mountain i would say that the distinction would be between Stoner Metal and Stoner Rock/Psychedelic. But i do listen to both genres.

"In the future" is a good kick-back yet heavy rock record. They have a great sound but it is just slightly shy of Metal in my opinion but still very good.

Funny story...I play guitar as a hoby, nothing serious since I'm not great, but i was at Guitar Center looking for strings. I told the guy there that i was looking for 60 or even 70 gauge, real thick strings for my electric if they had them. He asked Why? and i said i like to play real low tune Stoner metal style music. He said,
"What like Mastodon?"
Just thought that would make both Stoner and Mastodon fans laugh a little Smiler

Oh god haha, oh well. When I played guitar I was always a big fan of thick strings (on my semi-hollow) for a really nice, thick sound (played out of a nice old ampeg tube amp... sounded so buttery)

Grails is usually considered post-rock.
