I don’t really get the point of debating these two particular bands, plus there are about three other Metallica threads floating around but…we can let it stand for now.

I have heard a bit of each band and I would have to go with Metallica. I think they are more musical than Megadeth and have more clarity and melody in their music. I do like “Fade to Black” and “One” and those are songs that definitely resonate well with me. I always thought of Megadeth as a band to hear and scream to.

Plus, there is a marching band (my old alma mater) that’s doing a marching show composed of Metallica songs and it’s really cool. So maybe I am slanted too. Cool

This isn't much of a contest, but what the heck...Metallica, at least for the first three albums - while Burton was alive really - was the zenith of the metal scene. Megadeth could never hold a candle, and let's face it, Metallica booted Dave Mustaine in the first place. Anyway, to the OP, by posting this poll - with these two options - it really tells us quite a bit about your metal tastes. Can I give you some advice? Broaden your horizons, dude! Metal didn't die in the late 1980's with these bands (yeah, I know they're both still alive and kickin, but not really, you know?). If you're still listening primarily to 80's heavy metal/thrash, there's just so much more out there than that. (Unless you're about 14-17 y.o., then forget everything I just said, and keep head bangin'!)

Metallica takes the cake on this one, by a large margin. Metallica is the greatest Metal band of all time and is also probably one of the top 5 greatest bands of all time.

Wait! You don’t like The Beatles, yet Metallica is one of the top five greatest bands of all time? There is something wrong with you…

Something's wrong with me because i don't like the beatles. Wow, i've never heard that before. Kirk Hammett and Lars Ulrich have more musical talent than all 4 Beatles put together, easily.

Why thank you, thank you very much.

It's really not even a disputable fact in my mind. Hammett could play circles around Harrison or any of them. And Lars, i mean, come on, you actually think Ringo can match Lars' skill on the drums?

You take the immense skill of the musicians in Metallica and match it with the incredible lyrics and song writing and you've got a band that rivals Led Zeppelin.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. It's a bit like saying Michael Crichton is a far better novelist than that old Charles Dickens hack.

So, is anyone going to step up and honestly say that George Harrison was a better guitarist than Hammett?

Or claim that Ringo is a better drummer than Lars?

Because for those that make that claim, i'm going to have to question you're knowledge of both Hammett and Ulrich and Metallica's music.

Half their songs are loose tellings of mythological stories. The other half are headphone music for angry adolescent males. Again, I love Metallica, and they're probably more important to me personally than the Beatles, but their lyrics couldn't have been much less incredible. I probably would've been more likely to agree with you when I was an adolescent.

EDIT: sorry I basically just repeated what ericg75 said

Also, I don't think anyone is questioning the instrument virtuosity of Metallica. They're questioning the songwriting(in comparison to the Beatles). Nobody questions the guitar playing of Buckethead either(and my guess is he could shread circles around Hammett), but I don't see you calling him better than Metallica.

Regardless, I agree that Metallica wrote some fantastic songs. I think they've been devalued a bit with the whole Napster thing, but their contributions to music are substantial and in my mind irrefutable.

I'm not saying Lars Ulrich is a terrible drummer, but I think you underestimate Ringo as a drummer. At the time, he was well regarded as one of the best rock drummers around. And he basically defined the style of drumming that rock drummers still use today (matched grip, lower tuning). I don't know if you play the drums, but any number of professional drummers will tell you that Ringo knew his shit.

Well, at least you didn't claim that Ringo is better that Lars. That's like saying Ringo is better than Bonham or Pert.

And yes, I don't deny that back in his day Ringo was pretty decent on the drums, just like back in the day the Beatles were a great band. But that was a long time ago and music has come a long long ways since then.

i haven't heard much megadeth, but what i have is laughable compared to metallica.

i'm not even going to get into the beatles vs metallica argument because it's like comparing gold to... some other mineral that was noticeably inferior to gold in pretty much every way, and then hired bob rock as producer, which certainly didn't help its comparison to gold.

yeah, that simile got away on me...

No true Metallica fan recognizes any of their work post-black album.

I can't discuss this topic in depth, but I feel it's a legit topic, so let's just stay on THIS TOPIC (Metallica vs. Megadeth) from now on.

Just a suggestion... Cool
