I finally remembered to create this thread. This is where those of us who listen to the crazy thrashing metal. We can talk about "Cannibal Corpse" "Dimmu Borgir" "Cradle of Filth" and other similar artists. Any takers?

Cannibal Corpse were good until Barnes left. I got to see them live a couple of times with George"Corpsegrinder" singing, and they were pretty good both times. It was infuriating though because all night the crowd yelled for a certain song and then at the end of the night(both times)George announced here's the song you've all been waiting for and played Hammer Smashed Face! The crowd was screaming for I Cum Blood damn it! Got to see Napalm Death with Brutal Truth which was an excellent show, Brutal Truth kicked ass, I still love their first album too. The second time I saw Napalm Death, At The Gates opened for them and absolutely blew me away! The singer(Thomas I think)had the craziest power and range I have ever heard from a death metal singer. Their album Slaughter of the Soul remains one of my favorite heavy albums of all time! My favorite death metal band is Nile by a wide margin. All three of their major label albums are devastatingly heavy and tight. There is a focus to the lyrics which I appreciate quite a lot that many other dm bands don't have. Plus, their musicianship is outstanding. My favorite single dm album though is probably None So Vile by Cryptopsy. Flo is one of the best drummers I have ever heard in any medium, and I totally love Lord Worm's vocals. I hear that Lord Worm is back with the band and recording so I am very excited to hear that album when it comes out. The genre has gotten a little stale but there are still lots of bands within it making good music. As much as I love the early albums by bands like Carcass and Brutal Truth and miss those days, there are still excellent bands out there like Nasum and Cephalic Carnage to keep me interested.

Death is my all time fav death metal band - Schuldiner was tops, sad to know he died - major influence on my guitar playing.
Corpse kicked ass too - even after Barnes left I thought they were still good.
Six Feet Under - 'Haunted' must have for everyone into this genre

Death metal had a potential unmatched by any other type of new music - and there has been nothing like it since death metal came onto the scene. Tragic thing is the scene itself was over poplulated by 'shit' bands and this only helped to undermine the true value of the really good bands out there that pioneered it and the excellent bands that DID follow.

People dismissed the class because 'i can't understand the lyrics' or 'the guitars are too loud' or 'i'm a pussy and can't hack something so stark and brutal'

Go and listen to the cd 'Symbolic' by Death...really listen to it, you could just walk away a little enlightened.

of course there were MANY MANY death metal bands that sucked monkey balls, so, once again it winds up being preference.

Cynic and Atheist are my favorites. I know that they are not pure death metal, that they're more of a fusion of jazz with death metal but their sound is so perfect and everything works wondorfully well. Plus they both gather the most technical and skilled musiciens that I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. Have you ever seen a better drummer than Sean Reinert?!? I haven't, only maybe Slayer's Dave Lombardo may be a bit better, but I think that depends of your personal tasts. You should check out Cynic's "Focus" and Atheist's "Piece Of Time", both legendery and must listen to albums.
Death is also amazing, "Human" is their best album in my opinion, "Lack Of Compreension" and "Cosmic Sea" are masterpieces.

I'm looking for Russian Militant Black Metal. Semi-good production is a plus, as are clean vocals (if kept to a minimum). Also looking for vocals in Russian. Basically like a Russian version of Absurd...

I second that.

Carcass were always my favourite, particularly the Necroticism album. They just sounded so sludgey. One of the only bands who took the genre into new ground and their songs were so carefully considered - incredible lyrics up until Heartwork (although the guitars made up for it on that one).

No-one's mentioned Obituary here - John Tardy's voice is extraordinary. He sounds like he's puking out his own intestines. I can't think of another death metal vocalist who improvises without lyrics. Great stuff.

They don't make bands like that anymore.

Aaah nostalgia...

For anyone who like death metal, you should know about the Sounds of the Underground tour coming around soon. Amon Amarth, Gwar, Every Time I Die and many more.

Go to soundsoftheunderground.imeem.com and enter the poster design contest. You could win tickets, airfare and hotel accomodation.

Amon Amarth is effing righteous haha but they don't really fit in with that list. Gwar is a joke and i'm pretty sure Amon Amarth dispises Everytime i Die as well as CoB. As for the best Death metal band in my opinion is Dissection, i would say Rest in Peace Jon Nodveidt but i know thats not what he wants. Keep of Kalessin (more Black Metal) Zyklon, Vomitory, Enslaved, Immortal, and Emperor

Yeah, that list of bands isn't quite up to par IMHO.

Obituary, my god, they are still jamming. Their new disk is awesome, I love Redneck Stomp. Tardy does have that 'this is how death metal sounds' kind of voice - I wish I could come even a little close to being able to do that. Funny how he used to just say stuff like 'volleyball' on Slowly We Rot, cos it sounded cool, wasn't until Cause of Death that real lyrics started to be written.

deicide had some good stuff, if not blurring the line into noise metal, Once Upon the Cross and Serpents of the Light were very good.

The new Deathspell Omega is some sick shit. I wish I'd heard it sooner and it might have made my best of 2007 list.

Dimmu Borgir
Cannibal Corpse
Six Feet Under
As Blood Runs Black
Job For A Cowboy

I think that JFAC's newest album "Genesis" has a lot of Death Metal in it.
Especially the song "Embedded."

I just listened to Atheist for the first time yesterday, and my head nearly exploded. How fucking awesome are they? I had to come back to this thread and see if anyone had mentioned...so Nediam...my hat's off to you.

Just noticed this post.

There's precious little mention of Death these days - It's a shame when you consider how much they influenced things.

I seriously doubt metal would have been the same without Chuck Schuldiner. Why he is seldom mentioned in the media is baffling.

Gorod has a new album coming out sometime in 2008. Check out this awesome video for one of the new songs:

These guys are probably at the top of the tech death metal genre right now - along with Anata. Puts Origin to shame.
