Has anyone else noticed how Metallica seem to have based their entire career on Spinal Tap?
The Black Album, embarrassing 'rockumentaries', overblown stage sets that go wrong, arguments between two key band members, the recurring theme of having to replace one band member (bassists for Metallica, drummers for Tap). There are so many similarities.
Watching interviews with Kirk Hammett always reminds me of Derek Smalls - 'They're like fire and ice with me somewhere in between, sort of like lukewarm water'.
Any thoughts?

This is such a cute topic and appeals to my inner Rob Halford so much that I gotta pitch in.
Wouldn't it be interesting if it was true that Metal-Licker did sit around one day and make up a manifesto of what the Tap did and then proceeded to follow said plan?
The parallels are uncanny.
The lyric 'Obey your master' clearly refers to the guiding hand of The Tap. That they covered so many NWOBHM bands is a clear clue to Tap Britishness being so important. Hetfield has grown a Smalls moustache in obvious homage....oh yeah, the evidence is mounting up...

Well spotted. I totally missed the moustache connection!
Additionally, both bands were influenced by Saxon.
The cast for Spinal Tap hung around with Saxon as research for the film. Metallica played a lot of their first gigs with Saxon and quite obviously took notes, as all their early demos are crammed full of NWOBHM covers.
And Hetfield's hair in 'Cliff em all' is very obviously styled on both Biff (vocalist in Saxon) and David St Hubbins.

Deep down inside I'm hoping that your theory is true, Duncan. If Metallica were just taking the piss all this time, it would mean that there is hope that St Anger was intentional
It’s funny though, I remember watching Some Kind Of Monster and thinking o 0 (This disturbingly reminds me of This is Spinal Tap).
Imagine all my posts as if they were being read to you by Christopher Walken

I'd say Metallica has a slight edge over Spinal Tap.
I don't know - Metallica have tried and failed to rival the theatrical wonder of 'Stonehenge' with their own 'Justice For All' tribute to the majesty of Spinal Tap. Remember that huge grey polystyrene woman that used to collapse at the end of the show?
