After listening to Antithesis a couple of times, I can't really recommend it, unless you are the type of guy who just has to have every new death metal release. The relentless drum track (or god forbid, some dude is actually pounding away like a madman) is too annoying for me to take for more than a couple songs at a time.

I'd agree that it just sounds like abother Death Metal rehash, not bad but nothing even trying to break any molds. Well, there's nothin' wrong with checkin' it out.

The year's been a little slow in metal, but here's some goodies:

Witch - Paralyzed - when the novelty of J. Mascis playing drums wears off, this album sits alone as a shredding punk/metal mindfuck.

Prurient - And still, wanting
Meshuggah - ObZen
Disfear - Live the Storm
Genghis Tron - Board up the House
Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
Boris - Smile
Wrath of the Weak - Alogon
The Ocean - Precambrian (i believe this technically came out in 'aught 7 though)

That's all i got so far.

Check out the new one from The Sword. It may be better than Paralyzed. Also, be on the lookout for the new album from Gorod. I don't know what it's called yet, but there's this awesome video floating around:

The Wrath of the Weak album is really growing on me. It's still technically metal, but I think fans of ambient/drone will also find something to like. The last song is a 21-minute ambient saga - and completely devoid of black metal. The rest of the album is hypnotic, trance-like shoegaze/bm with shrieky vocal placed way back in the mix. I swear if you didn't know what to listen for, you may think the entire album is instrumental. It's definitely worth picking up for any fans of Burzum or the s/t debut from WoW.

I'm really liking The Sword's new album but wasn't much into Torche's any random recommendations based on that?

I've really been diggin the new Forteresse (kinda shoegazey black metal/"ambient black metal") and Monolith Deathcult (I could see it being called Black Metal with a progressive slant or Progressive Death, either way.... a little bit of electronics going on in parts... absolutely epic).

good finds jglass. Forteresse immediately reminds me of Wolves in the Throne Room, which is defanitely a great thing considering their release last year was incredible. Monolith Deathcult are no doubt entertaining, but I can't take them seriously (maybe thats what they're going for).

You should check out Cavity Laid Insignificant on HydraHead records. They're more in the metal-punk vein of things. Remind me of Disfear, but more angular.

I have to admit, I haven't heard anything that Earth shattering since Bossk's '2' earlier this year.

The last truly great metal band for me were Strapping Young Lad. I suppose their recent 'best of' type thing qualifies for the greatest metal album of 2008 thus far. Devin Townsend is a hero.

Cool. I noticed this one a few weeks ago, and was thinking about picking it up. You've given me the push I needed. Another band I heard a few snippets from is Verdunkeln, a Burzum-esque German bm group.

This is a re-release from the late 90's. It's good, though. It's on my wish list.

how foolish of me .. i assumed it was a 2008 release as it was one the featured cd's on the hydrahead website. but whateves, as you said, it's a great release regardless release date.

Try out Witch Paralyzed .. it's more of a stoner rock album, but it certainly rocks out hard.

I just got Saviour's first album Crucifire. It's not quite as good as Into Abaddon, but it's definitely worth getting if you like that one.

Nortt has a new album out Galgenfrist. It's a really heavy (dark) ambient black metal album. The vocals are fairly sparse, and overall, it creates a rather gloomy atmosphere.
