I know it's already been mentioned, but I was listening to Voivod's Dimension Hatross today - really, really good stuff. The music is forward-thinking without being annoyingly progressive to the point where it's not fun to listen to. I love the guitar work in particular.

Funny you should mention. I just got Killing Technology and War and Pain yesterday. Along with Coroner, very overlooked thrash bands. (Did we discuss Coroner already?) ********************** Metal-Archives POTDquote: im looking for pretty much the most uninspired/unoriginal brutal and/or slam death. with little or no variation in vocals. stuff like disgorge(us) and condemned.

It's terrible but I've never heard War and Pain, although I have the original release of Killing Technology on cassette (Noise). That album showed promise (there are occasional nods towards space rock), but I didn't think they really matured until Dimension Hatross. I also dug out RRROOOAAARRR!!! the other day - that's one very noisey album, including the track 'Fuck off and die'. Coroner are another band I have to check out. I'll really have to go through this thread and write a list of bands and albums I've still not heard. Another thrash album I recently found in amongst all my old cassettes was ex-Megadeth guitarist Chris Poland's solo album Return To Metalopolis. It has moments of jazz, but the majority of it is crunchy guitars with some excellent drumming courtesy of Mark Poland. Best of all, there are no dubious vocals to take your focus off the excellent riffs. I found that was a persistent problem in a lot of thrash.

Definitely! Interestingly, I had their album Grin (1993) for the last 15 years, but I never really liked it. I basically bought it at the time because I figured it would be death metal (Coroner, eh?). Well, it isn't death metal, and by that time Coroner weren't even really a thrash band anymore, so I never gave them another thought - that is until recently when I started my thrash "research" project (partly stimulated by this thread). I "discovered" that earlier in their career they (along with Voivod) were one of the pioneers of what is now often called tech or avant garde thrash. I love Kreator, Destruction, Sodom, etc. But mixing a little Voivod and Coroner in the mix certainly makes the thrash experience vastly more entertaining. For a Coroner primer, I recommend R.I.P. (1987) and Punishment for Decadence (1988), their first two albums. ********************** Metal-Archives POTDquote: im looking for pretty much the most uninspired/unoriginal brutal and/or slam death. with little or no variation in vocals. stuff like disgorge(us) and condemned.

Oh man - Grin is awesome, different than the older stuff - tunes like 'When Angels Die' from PfD just blister - then check out something like 'Sirens' or 'The Perfect Game' - their transition over the years is one that is only outshined by another great that was: Death, Chuck Schuldiner. If you look at the whole Coroner package spread out over it's time - in the end they had really refined what they wanted to do in the beginning - catchy, fast, progressive, heavy, technical, twisted...everything came together. I'm sad there'll be no more coroner albums....there's No More Color left in the world..... :P And sorry for the dbl post.

I can't think of any more right now. I still listen to thrash on a regular basis, never really stopped.
You're missing Destruction, which I gather the band Mad Butcher is named after their first album. Some others that have been mentioned already: Sadus, Morbid Saint, Heathen, Dark Angel. ********************** Metal-Archives POTDquote: im looking for pretty much the most uninspired/unoriginal brutal and/or slam death. with little or no variation in vocals. stuff like disgorge(us) and condemned.

BOLT THROWER!!! Great band. They played a lot of the toilets around the UK in the late 80s/early 90s and were much loved by a small band of acne ridden scruffy teenagers such as myself. I remember reading an interview with them in KERRANG! (back in 1938 when it was good) - they talked in an irony free way about a mad fan who kept throwing bolts at them. Classic Spinal Tap behaviour. But what a band - heavy as fuck.

Oh, man...Nuclear Assault...I wonder where I put that tape...Game Over was such a great album---Hang the Pope!!! *L* Out of curiosity, though, what are your thoughts on the new wave of old-skool thrash--you know, your Warbringer, your Toxic Holocaust, your Municipal WasteÉ

Trivium is the only new band I listen too. Either the music nowadays is too...metal-corish(?) or it's just a blast of meaningless notes called a rythym. It's hard coming from the era where riffs were the foundation in thrash - it's all about the rythym of the song. My personal tastes were fostered by Hetfield, Mustaine, Hunolt, Schuldiner and Ian. Any new bands I hear, most just don't cut the mustard. I find no balance in the music. Trivium is the exception, The Crusade is a big step in the right direction of what I want. It is what Metallica should have put out after Garage Days instead of Justice, blasphemy I know. ezatldude - Yeah - it was Destruction, not Mad Butcher - I'm thinking that EP or whatever it was. Duncan Black LMAO! that's too funny. haha, man that's good. some other bands; Celtic Frost (up until Cherry Fields), Dethroned Emperor, Into Crypts of Ray, The Usurper....Tom G. Warrior had some incredibily heavy catchy riffs back then. Once he wanted to hop on the 'hip' wagon and go with some makeup and hairspray and wuss out on the guitar - I was lost forever to them, though I still enjoy the early stuff. 83-86 was the good stuff. Ripping Corpse A band out of NJ, U.S., they were borderline black/death metal - but Dreaming with the Dead was a thrash stuffed delight. This was early 90's. Wrathchil America Climbin' the Walls. You gotta love titles with stuff like 'Climbin' in them! Very sterile sounding metal, not the best but had an oddly addiciting sound at times. This wasn't fast thrash or even very crunchy thrash, dry. late 80's Flotsam and Jetsam Mostly known because of that bass player who used to play with Metallica. Doomsday for the Deceiver was an ok piece of work, I much preferred No Place for Disgrace, it had that really overdriven guitar sound and no mids with lots of highs in the music. late 80's

I still have Doomsday for the Deceiver on cassette. Jason's bass was quite up-front if memory serves. He's doing pretty well in this thread. I think we've mentioned at least 3 bands he's been in. He was also in that weird off-shoot with Devin Townsend from Strapping Young Lad, but I can't remember what it was called. I believe his collaboration with Townsend sparked off the arguments with Hetfield that led to his leaving the band - they treated him pretty badly.

No, Echobrain was the band he started once he was unshackled from the mighty 'tallica. Echobrain were slick, if unexciting. They were a sort of alternative hard rock band, opposed to flat out metal. There is a clip of Jason's project with Devin on Youtube somewhere - it sounded like one of those offensive bands designed to annoy absolutely everyone - typically Townsend and not unlike Mr Bungle's side project 'Weird Little Boy' (a band which featured the lyrics ' If you buy this record you are INSAAAANE!'). It's not exactly great music and sounds like angry people taking revenge on the music industry. I just wish I could remember what it was called. I believe it was never released because of all the shannanagins with Metallica, but somehow, someone got hold of a demo copy. I think it got one play on an obscure radio station. I hope I'm right on this one! I'll go hunt for it now...

Found it! Apparently it was called 'IR8 vs SEXOTURICA' and also featured members of Sepultura - IR8 vs SEXOTURICAIt's not very good, but it's certainly crunchy and heavy - I suppose it fits this thread. I believe Jason's on vocals.

I have it on vinyl. Sadly, I think most of the NA back catalogue has been deleted. There was a live album that came out about a year ago. Try ordering something from a retailer - they usually pull up a list of all commercially available titles. I used to work for one of those chains and as far as I remember most of Nuclear Assault's stuff had a big red 'D' next to it for discontinued. Maybe they've re-issued some of it since then.

Exumer! German thrash band formed back in 1984. Why these guys are grouped along with the "Teutonic Trio" is beyond me. They're freakin' fantastic! ********************** Metal-Archives POTDquote: im looking for pretty much the most uninspired/unoriginal brutal and/or slam death. with little or no variation in vocals. stuff like disgorge(us) and condemned.
