What do you think of it? I know it's infamous for cheesiness but there are plenty of phenomal bands in the genre. I'm personally a fan of:

Kamelot
Pagan's Mind
Dream Theater
Symphony X
Shadow Gallery
Nightwish
Sonata Arctica
Angra
Secret Sphere

Why is Nightwish in that list?

Checkt out Dark Moor, Fairyland, Dragonforce and Avantasia.

I happen to like Nightwish. Not their first two albums, but everything after that.

And I generally don't listen to bands that use the same old Dungeons and Dragons lyrics. Don't get me wrong, some of them have amazing musical talent (Rhapsody, for example) but just don't offer anything new or meaningful.

Avantasia's pretty cool, though, I must say.

Queensryche does count-prog metal through and through.

My favorite band is Dream Theater. Like them or not, you can't deny that they're one of the best bands instrumentally ever.

Been listening to a band called DragonForce lately. Check this out, power metal fans.

Through the Fire and Flames

I'm a pretty big fan of King Diamond. His voice takes a lot of getting used to, but albums like Abigail and Them just blow me away.

Blind Guardian is a power metal band akin to DragonForce, not as many speed/thrash metal elements to them. And Nightwish are symphonic metal, it's a strech to categorize them as power or progressive, methinks.

Here's a few more:
Stratovarius
Royal Hunt
Pyramaze
Ensiferum
Evergrey
Dream Evil
liquid tension experiment

Some of those are only loosely based on power/prog metal, actually.
