Imagine my surprise looking at this metal forum for the first time, and not a single Mastodon thread. It's about time, what with "Blood Mountain" coming out in a few weeks. So let it be written, so let it be done...

Mastadon are wicked. I bought Laviathon not too long ago and while I'm not sure Im ready to jump on the "future of Metal" tag so many people want to give them. They are tremendous

I'm no metal fan, but I've heard positive things about them from other non-metal fans.

What's their music like, basically?

Elements of the classic metal bands like prime era Metallica, epic riffing, a drummer who rolls like an angry storm at sea, heavy themes and imagery, blended with math rock and hardcore, interesting melodies and rhythms, 3 shouters who harmonize, and technical skill in abundance. That's my take.

I'm off to see them live in Lawrence, KS on Monday. It should be an ass-kickin' good time!

Been listening to a few songs on MySpace. Colour me intrigued!

I think that one of the things that puts me off a lot of metal is the vocals, which was a bit of a problem for me here, but I like the math-rock-esque instrumental bits between verses and such.

i concur. dont get me wrong, but when i listen to heavier stuff such as mastodon, i really have no f'n clue what they're singing about. i know its not the total point of all music, but c'mon...

Mastodon is 1 of 2 metal bands I listen to (the other being dimmu borgir)... and I must say, they're AMAZING. I love leviathon.

i just watched them a couple of weeks ago with converge, and they put on a pretty good set i must say.

Mastodon could shit on a mic and it'd still sound good following Converge's set. I hate that band with a passion.
