I think they're one of those metal bands that bangs on guitars really loudly and screams really loudly in every song. And has one of those really fake underground images..like, they wear masks, refer to each other by number, and call the audience 'maggots'.
But, they're one of the more musically talented of those metal groups.

I think that they are one of those bands whose followers go "Underground" by staying mainstream. I have never liked them, even when I like more mainstream metal like mudvayne. I wouldn't call them "The best" anything, certainly not in as broad a category as "Best metal band ever." The musicianship is far from precise and their lyrics are horrid. If you want something "Hardcore" there is already plenty of good stuff to find. You could even stay mainstream with White Zombie and some of the early Rob Zombie. And since you used the term metal I could throw in System of a Down, Tool, early Iron Maiden, et cetera. Or you could find some more obscure bands like Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth.
Now I mean no offence to those who like bands that I hate, just a difference in opinion. But if you are not familiar with any of the bands I mentioned, you should certainly check them out.

Cradle of Filth are about obscure as white sugar and Dimmu Borgir brown. Slipknot are pretty much the product of one of the best marketing schemes ever. Neither bad but never getting close to great. Probably one of the better bands out of a very large pool full of alot of tripe.
Slipknot has good market, but that is the only thing that they have going for them. I mean if your entire marketing scheme is that you wear jumpsuits and masks, I don't know if it is that interesting. I am going to try and end this before it turns into a "Slipknot Sucks!!" "No ur dumb Slipknot is awsome!!" conversation. So that is it, I just don't find the appeal in them or their music. I guess one could say I just don't "Get" it.

Probably for the best as those arguments are dire and repetative. I listened to them when i was younger and liked them, wouldn't give them the time of day now though. I view them as band with credibility that act as a stepping stone for people who want to get into heavier music.

The band itself i guess you could be right as everyone is limited to what they can do in a band. Think its Mike, one of the guitarists anyway, apparently he is very talented on the guitar and does alot of work with newer/underground bands with helping them record EPs and introducing them to quality lables.
I had always derided them for having so many members but still sounding like crap on stage, however, they have evolved into a pretty good band and their live performances have definately tightened up. The early albums annoyed me because every disc starts with a few killer, heavy tracks and then descends into obnoxious whining. The last album and tour propelled them into legitimacy and out of the realm of singular-theme bands in my opinion. Rick Rubin has to share some of that credit.
"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
I actually almost got into a fist fight with a slipknot fan once. I just told him they were a fake band that attends the grammy's. It's all part of the mainstream marketing. "Dont like the strokes? We have them in other flavors" There's no doubt that some of those masks look fantastic though. But like too many of these modern "metal" bands, its all talk and no music.
Slipknot is the response to every teenager wanting to make their parents angry. They're so focused on being loud and angry to please their target audience they forget to make good music.
And they stole a few ideas from Mr Bungle too. I wish they'd admit it. Their early demos are almost carbon copies of Bungle. Even the masks. They back-tracked when they realised that kids 'don't do jazz'. Jazz is the one way to REALLY alienate yourself from an audience.
Having said that I do like Joey's drumming and all the released stuff is reminiscent of proper metal bands like Carcass. I just don't like the commercial 'in emotional pain' chorus-parts (thank you Korn).
If you're going to be balls out metal, it's 100 percent brutal with a sprinkle of doom and gloom for garnish.

Slipknot, in one word, are "posers." They wear those stupid masks and scream and make like they're a death metal band. Then they try to write pop songs. It's hard to tell whether they want to be a death metal band at all. What bothers me the most is the angsty teens screaming "YEAH! SCREW YOU POSERS! SLIPKNOT RULES!" (look at the reader reviews of their cd's on Metacritic and you'll know what I'm talking about: "who cares what those piece of shit guys that work for magazines say. they dont even listen to this shit so they should have no say. for now on when they decide to review a cd they need to ask the fans or at least the people who listen to metal. not some gay ass fuck head who beats off to elton john. WE MAGGOTS ARE AN ARMY!!". Excuse me, you're not listening to death metal, you're listening to a group of posers writing generic pop songs. How about backing yourself up with an actual point? And who are you to criticize people who actually have taste in music? I feel like I'm not backing up my opinion enough either
And I hate metal, but there's just so much better stuff out there than Slipknot.

I can see your point though. Slipknot fans are reminiscent of Pantera fans from 10 years ago. Difference was that Pantera didn't get much airplay in the mainstream. Slipknot have had tons of it - and how do they show their appreciation? By slagging off all the people who've fuelled their business empire. At least Pantera stayed away from pop music.
I don't know - I've been posting here for a while now and to be honest I think I'm done with mainstream popular culture. It's just too predictable. I don't like anything in the charts, on MTV - I don't even like computer games - nothing is dangerous or exciting anymore. I find I prefer stuff I see in the local pub or musicians I actually know - I prefer REALITY to all this celebrity bollocks. There's an unknown session drummer I hang around with who burnt his own house down - THAT'S dangerous. Slipknot? Masks? Not scary I'm afraid.
I got rid of my TV a couple of years ago. When someone does something original I'll think about buying another one. That goes for everything in commercial media.
Oh and get yourself some decent metal Joji (please). You may not like it that much right now but if it's done right it's amazing stuff. Metal should be the ugliest, most brutal form of music on the face of the planet. If you've only been exposed to Slipknot, I would recommend Napalm Death's 'From Enslavement to Obliteration'. Now THAT'S proper metal!
And I listen to The Beach Boys.

Haha. Good points. Yes, I have been exposed to much "good" metal. I'm just not a fan of the genre.
A friend of mine knows a guy from a real death metal band. The burn sheep's heads and worship satan. Which goes to prove my point that Slipknot are posers.

Yep, you said it all. Slipknot are just another one of those crappy nu-metal bands (eg. korn, limp bizkit, mudvayne, etc) and I dont even consider them music at all, even though one of the drummers (the one with the white mask and crap) is a mediocre/good drums player and he's the only good thing good about the band. They do give out crazy and energetic shows though.
well, i think slipknot is a talented band, but they just dont use there talent to the fullest. Most people dont know that slipknot put out a SLOW ROCK album, in which they had slow songs, which im my opinion, were amazing, but some of those die-hard slipknot fans were like ARG! WE WANT TO LISTEN TO SOME HEAVY FUCKING METAL! WTF! WHYD YOU GO PUSSY ON US! but hey, it just shows that slipknot can spread their talents to more than one musical genre...
