O.k. I get that Burzum is not for everyone. How about Summoning? Especially good if you like your black metal to be based on LOTR.

Look mongrel I know you are new here and all but try to tone it down with the foul language. Maybe you don't agree with someone not liking metal but there is no need to be so vile and malicious.

I've been getting drunk and hardcore dancing to Burzum on my roof while howling at the moon lately. Seriously. My friends and I get a kick out of it... youtube video coming soon? Possibly.

Although metal is no where near as popular any more we still have bands such as Trivium, As I Lay Dying, Slipknot and countless more. What pisses me off is just now the whole nation seems to like shitty pop music Mad

You seem to like poppy metal music... so why is your pop-metal superior to christina aguilera?

The new Celtic Frost
Jesu
Sunn O)))
New Opeth
Electric wizard
mastadon
Pelican
Isis
Gojira (check em out. decent french prog/death/sludge)
ihsahn
cult of luna
callista
boris (and namesake Neurosis)
Slugg (blangstern label not hip hop)

These are the bands I've been listening to lately, can anyone suggest any decent prog rock/stoner/doom. I prefer instrumental. Some vocals are ok if they don't suck. I'm new. Thanks ahead of time.

Check out Bossk - they have two instrumental songs and each one lasts about 20 minutes. I've seen them live quite a few times now. Good band.

Thanks Mr. Black. Can you suggest a place where I can download? I looked at both the sites I use, and nada. There's no music stores for at least 1400 miles from my vantage point. Thanks ahead of time.

I don't know where you can download it, but I found their myspace, if you'd like to listen -

Bossk myspace

They supported Cult of Luna a while back

There's a link to their main website on their myspace. They're good blokes - If you e-mail them, they should tell you where to get hold of a CD.

As for other stoner/prog albums, I'd suggest Ozric Tentacles 'Strangeitude' album (from the late 80s/early 90s). It's not very metal but I'd definitely call it stoner music and it's completely instrumental. Ed Wynne's guitars are amazing - very prog indeed. They got labelled as 'Space rock' but that's no bad thing.

Thanks for the Bossk info. I checked their myspace yesterday but couldn't play the song. I'm way the hell off the radar and my internet drags, so it's nothing but clipping when I try to stream. Maybe I'll take the plunge and buy...

As for Ozric Tentacles. I remember them. Thanks again.

Cheers

I have thought of some others - These aren't traditional metal albums, but in my days as a student I smoked a lot of pot and the following records sounded excellent. As a result, I'd recommend them to anyone who listens to 'stoner' music -

The Orb - 'Pomme Fritz'
Sadly deleted but beautiful

Steve Reich/Pat Metheny - 'Electric Counterpoint'
Beautiful minimalism on 13 guitars. All dynamics are 'played'. There is no mixing, effects or studio trickery although you'd swear there is

Pink Floyd - 'Dark side of the moon'
Obvious but what the hell

'Wavy Gravy' -
compilation album of outrageously stupid psychadelic 60s garage bands mixed with audio from B movie trailers - you will laugh until it HURTS!

The Bladerunner soundtrack
Vangelis is surprisingly good on this one - bit depressing at times but I made up for it with Wavy Gravy

Hope these are of some use. If you want something ridiculously heavy, may I heartily recommend Raging Speedhorn's debut album.

Someone please tell fragilekida emo boy to shut up. He doesn't like metal. Who cares?

Metal is not dead. You can't kill the metal. When all other forms of music have long since died, metal will remain. Because metal will bash the skulls of anyone who tries to destroy it.

Mastodon is pretty good, I guess if any metal band out there were to carry the torch it would be them. However, they fall far short of Metallica's first four albums or pantera's first four albums.

BTW,System of a Down is metal and they kick some serious hardcore ass.

That's ancient history...and so is mongrel and his "street metal" lingo. Cool

But you really need to be wary of classical music. Those "wimp" orchestras have lots of bows (and arrows) and could very easily kill a leathered-up metal band. I think you'd better advise them to armor up!

Yes, but the classical musician lacks the killer instinct of the true metal warrior. At the first sight of blood the orchestra would run for the hills.

That made me laugh. Are you Jack Black in disguise? I think Tenacious D are in the house.

Great lyrics.

What about Lesbian's album Power Hor? It came out this year and it's damn good (it's not in any of the genres requested but it's good metal related to those bands)
