Um yeh its pretty dead.
There's a few notable exceptions over the last couple years.
I mean System of a Down always gets high points
and there's this new band I HATE but it's really creative metal kind of different - you should check it out - Therion

Mastodon does very well in the metal genre, too.

I think it's a bit like rock n' roll: sometimes a new mixture of elements re-model the genre for a while until there's a new one. After all, it's always rock n' roll and it's the same for metal.

I saw a converge when they played w/ mastodon, and maybe there album lyrics are different, but uh... I wouldn't reccomend them to anyone. Their lyrics consist of one word: Fuck.

Oh wait, and the occasional spoken word romp, in that breathy, low, I'm going to slit my wrists emo voice.

Gross.

this is very intriguing...I quite like those cheeky monkeys, but to go from quicksilver thin chug along to Metal??
I have to hear that...plus ain't they just too wordy and ironic for metal?? Smiler

The track isn't actually metal, he's saying that metal kids would like it too. I listened to it... it's not bad.

In other news, I've had the new Dimmu album for a while now and it's pretty good. I know there's not much dimmu love on this board but oh well...

Well, that makes it even more curious...maybe metal will make a comeback in '07!
I was thinking the other day that Mastodon are now in the position with the release of Blood Mountain that Metallica were with (the "difficult" 3rd album), Master of Puppets.
That was Metallica's first real breakthrough to a wider audience, perhaps it's Mastodon's year?
I don't know Dimmu....

Some of the early stuff is ok, pretty good, in fact. They "evolved" along the lines of COF, becoming almost Evanescence-like cheesy and poserish. If you want real, honest-to-goodness, scary black metal, get some of the early Burzum. That'll knock your socks off.

I don't really like Burzum.. I know they basically started the whole genre, but... they just loack any musical depth. That's why some these black metal bands appeal to me, they're not nearly as one-dimensional as a lot of other metal.
