I strongly suggest the Linux handheld system mentioned in the "Linux PSP Killer?" forum. It's pretty cheap, considering all of the features on it. That's if you want to play emulators, though.

Not sure if you the PSP yet or not, so I'll respond anyway....*I don't have any handheld systems*
One of my buddies let me borrow his PSP over the weekend, and while I gotta say, it was pretty neat playing almost PS2 type graphics on a handheld, the games got pretty boring after just a short amount of playtime....and the joystick to control things is very hard to use, IMO (it seems way too small). With that said, the games I played were GTA: Liberty City Stories, Need For Speed Underground Rivals, and NBA 06.
The latter two were pretty forgettable....
GTA had its moments, but I couldn't help but feel that the 3 console games were far, far superior experiences. The controls and camera (which kinda did its own thing) needed more work....and although the gameplay is still pretty solid, it seems kinda outdated at this point. The sound, however (especially the music) was excellent....and the story was well thought out. I've heard from many that it's the best game for the system, so if that's true, count me out for the PSP right now. It was a good game, but by no means a system seller.
I'm really thinking about getting a DS though after playing New Super Mario Bros....to me, that is an experience that can't be beat on a handheld.
